“Relaxing in West Cork”
Reviewed May 28, 2012

The unusually bad July weather when we visited was forgotten about during our stay at this B+B and restaurant in West Cork. Dinner was excellent and the room was overlooking the harbour. Good breakfast also, with pleasant staff. A good spot to relax and convenient for other attractions such as Barley Cove beach and Mizen Head (lighthouse centre).

Room Tip: Make sure you have a room with harbour view if possible.

Struggling to find food and rest on the peninsula, a almost given up hope when we stumbled on the cove. We were given the only twin and poorest room as all the best rooms with balconies taken. All necessary conveniences present however. Food in restaurant was excellent and rather than select your wine from a menu, you did so from the shelf with full details available. Very quiet surrounds with local walks. Ideal for Crookhaven and Mizzen head visits.

Room Tip: Book ahead at weekends. Choose room with balcony.

This is an old style B+B, probably living a little in the past, which need not be a put off.
The food is what I would call 1960s Ireland, nothing wrong, but I can't remember what I had, which is in itself comment enough.
Now I noticed below a comment on the smell, that I can remember, it is 1960's also. Great location, great view when the tide is in, so look up the tide tables first.
No I was not impressed, but if I was there in 1960, I might have been more impressed. It need a bit of Capital injection !

Room Tip: Not above the kitchen fan

We took advantage of a special offer for 2 nights B&B and 1 dinner and were not disappointed.having stayed at The Heron's Cove about 5 years ago we were delighted to see that it had remained the same-basic but roomy and comfortable bedroom with beautiful view of the Cove directly in front of the bedroomof the balcony.
The dining room is comfortable and breakfast is as good as one can get-tasty local produce served by friendly local staff.
In the evening the log fire helps the ambiance. Dinner is also good although the a la carte menu will set you back a bit-the 3 course menu at €30 is reasonable. They have a unique wine cellar that displays the wines with descriptions and prices (very reasonable)attached by labels-it's a fun way of choosing.
4 bars and a few local stores are a 2 minute walk away.
Goleen is well located to explore nearby Crookhaven,Schull,Mizen Head, and Sheep's Head.
A perfect week-end getaway and very good value.

I recently stayed in the Herons Cove for a two night stay, it is such a beautiful setting there, with plenty to do locally and to visit, the Mizen bridge, Crookhaven, the beach and so many areas to walk in. We ate in the restaurant on the Friday night and found the food to be to an excellent standard, there was an extensive choice and the food was beautiful when served. The restaurant was very busy the night we were there, but the service was fantastic and there was a great buzz and atmosphere. That was my third visit to the Herons Cove and I'm looking forward to my next visit already!

While the main attraction of the Heron's Cove is the excellent restaurant, the rooms are very pleasant and with a view of the Cove which changes with the tide and the light. The restaurant is excellent. The staff are very welcoming and helpful. Cuisine is based on local produce especially fish and meat. The fixed menu offers an excellent choice and almost distracts from the a la carte menu and the wine choice is very good. The breakfast choice is splendid. The Mizzen Peninsula is beautiful and Goleen is a good base to see it and the nearby areas of West Cork. We will be back

Heron's Cove has just six bedrooms and overlooks a very peaceful tidal harbour where, surprise, surprise herons can be seen fishing. As a B&B I think it is one of the best in Cork and offers excellent value.

Sue, the owner makes sure that everything is kept clean and tidy and the bedrooms are very cosy on a rainy day. The restaurant downstairs serves excellent food and has a great wine list/rack - fresh seafood and excellent steaks.

It is a very popular place and in summer is usually fully-booked. The staff buzz around trying to be as quick and efficient as possible but sometimes you need to wait a tad - it is not a fast-food joint! The breakfasts are way above average and basically you can have anything you want (within reason!) Great sausages and full Irish or omelettes cooked just right. The area around Goleen is spectacular - Barleycove Bay, Brow Head, Three Castle Head, Mizen Head, Crookhaven, Schull, Balleydehob and is breathtaking (more so when the sun shines........) As a base for the far West of Cork it is a great place to stay and unwind. We will always have many happy memories and please Sue keep the place running for many more years yet! We try to return every Summer - although Autumn would be great time to visit too.
