“Great Experience, Amazing people, and the world's cutest puppy!”
Reviewed August 27, 2012

La Mariposa Spanish School and Eco Hotel was an amazing experience. I am 14 years old and stayed at the hotel for two weeks with my mom and younger sister. I couldn't speak any Spanish, but still the hotel staff and people in the community were very friendly. Our rooms were simple but clean. The food was amazing, consisting of what was in season at the time. I loved the animals, mostly the monkeys, dogs, and chickens. At about the time we came, there was a new rescue puppy brought in. She was a real plus to my stay. My sister and I played with her every day! The activities were all fun as well. La Mariposa also helps out a school that my sister and I visited. They also keep the hotel eco friendly, so be sure to turn off your lights leaving a room! My spanish has greatly improved and I am looking foward to continuing it once school starts.

Your little puppy is doing really well.....she got very attached to Rosa, our accountant and went to live at her house. We see her regularly. Keep switching off those lights!!! Abrazos from all of us.

I spent just over 2 months at La Mariposa this summer. I arrived with 3 objectives: Learn Spanish, volunteer with one of La Mariposa's projects and soak up as much Nicaraguan culture as possible. Success!
I chose La Mariposa because of it's location in the hills outside of Managua, which I find fairly central for those choosing La Mariposa as a jumping off point after flying into Managua and planning on continuing on. It's not in a tourist area, so you get the real feel for Nicaragua in a slower paced and arguably safer environment than some of the more popular tourist spots in Nicaragua. Nearby are also breathtaking views of Volcan Masaya and the hikes take you out into the beautiful farm country nearby.
I lived in a Mariposa arranged home stay in La Concha in a very clean, quiet and unbelievably wonderful environment with my host family. (However plan on leaving your city sensibilities of flush toilets and long showers behind for much more eco-friendly and adventure based toilet/shower facilities!) I spent half of each day volunteering and the other half working on my Spanish with some top notch Spanish professors.
La Mariposa is a gorgeous ecohotel with a laid back atmosphere, the staff are friendly and accommodating, the food is served family style and is healthy, tasty and vegetarian (I especially love the eggplant!)

Overall, Make sure to read the details of why to visit La Mariposa on their website for a more in depth discussion of whether it is the spot you're looking for, but in my opinion, you simply can't beat the price for the experience.

Room Tip: I didn't stay in the hotel, but if you are choosing La Mariposa for a Spanish language intensive...

I loved my stay at La Mariposa. I stayed for a month in the ecohotel and went by myself, but met many wonderful people there. The hotel room was very comfortable with a beautiful view of the gardens. The food was excellent. My teachers were friendly and helpful. The grounds were lovely. The activities were well-organized and fun. What I like the most about La Mariposa is that it is a nonprofit that helps generate employment for the people in the area and also contributes to various community projects. Overall, I had a wonderful time, and hope to return in the future.

We spent 3 weeks at La Mariposa. I took my kids (aged 14, 11, 8) and we stayed with a family near the school. They were incredibly welcoming, accommodating and caring. The living conditions were very simple and clean; the food was delicious. We had one room for the 4 of us (5 when my husband joined us after 2 1/2 weeks) and yet we had all we needed! We would walk to school each morning (10 minutes) and take amazing Spanish classes. The kids worked part of the time on the grounds (I needed more lesson time than they did!) and I worked on the farm a couple of days. We participated in the schools' excursions and we learned so much about the culture, history, politics and local area. The local people were so friendly and welcoming - we always felt safe and did not have any issues what so ever (we traveled for 12 days after the Mariposa too). If you want to see a fabulous area that will really give you insight on Nica life, go to La Mariposa and just settle in. You will be amazed at what you learn about Nicaragua and honestly, yourself. My son shocked me one day when we were hand washing our clothes in the front yard, "Mom, I like this simple life!" Priceless. We had a very tearful goodbye when we left our host family. We have never done a long trip like this and certainly we have not been some place with such limited amenities. We loved it and would do it again in a heart beat! Spanish, volcanoes, beaches, local artisans, salsa dancing, city tours -- all fantastic excursions! La Mariposa is smart! They have figured out quality service, fair pricing, and unique experiences in a beautiful setting. The mixture of ages and nationality made it even more interesting. We will keep in touch and hope to return soon! If you ant more info on this trip, feel free to email me!

Room Tip: Stay with a family if you can live without hot showers (although La Mariposa has an outdoor hot show...

I spent 7 weeks at La Mariposa as a solo female traveler this summer and enjoyed every minute of it! I would highly recommend the school if you're interested in experiencing a more "real" part of Nicaragua with less gringos. The teachers are well educated and professional, the school is beautiful, the locals are friendly, the staff is helpful...everything you need to make the experience great. I was also really impressed with how the school caters to families, providing teachers specialized in teaching children and homestays that accommodate entire families. At the end of my time there, I not only learned quite a bit of Spanish, but also a lot about Nicaragua. I hope to return in the next few years!

My son and I had a great week working with the folks at La Mariposa. We wanted a homestay, service opportunities, and some work on our Spanish at the language school and they accomodated our requests with patience and professionalism. The homestay family was terrific, the teachers enrgentic, and the overall vibe of the place was friendly, knowledgeable, efficent, and relaxed. Great people!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
La Mariposa is a small, friendly non-profit Spanish school and eco-hotel, just outside the small town of La Concepcion, Nicaragua. Only an hour from Nicaragua's major attractions - Granada, the Pacific Coast, the Laguna de Apoyo, Masaya volcano - and 45 minutes from Managua airport, La Mariposa is surrounded by organic coffee, banana trees and flower gardens. Our cool, green climate (we are 500 meters above sea level - makes a real difference to the temperature) is ideal for studying Spanish! Our conservation efforts - though small scale - have vastly increased our bird population, butterflies and even frogs! We offer intensive Spanish classes in our purpose built classrooms or in outdoor classrooms in our delightful grounds, full of tropical plants and rescued animals. Classes are mostly one on one (max 2 or 3 in a class) and we cater for all levels form beginner to advanced, including specially designed classes for children. We have an extensive library with Spanish study materials and a selection of books in English on Nicaraguan history, development issues etc. We organize a full week (that includes weekends) of activities, including cooking and salsa classes, classes on the history of Nicaragua and a weekly update of what is happening in the Nicaraguan news. These are delivered in Spanish to help with progress in Spanish and with English translation if necessary. On 3 afternoons and Saturdays we offer trips out to local places of interest as well as the Masaya volcano by night, the Masaya markets and artesanias, Granada, Leon, the Laguna de Apoyo, the Pacific beach, Managua, Catarina, the Pueblos Blancos and more! The trips are rotated on a monthly schedule. There are various accomodation options - Students can stay in the eco-hotel (ensuite rooms) or our eco rooms (cheaper). There is a also a large (en suite) family room. Situated about 5 mins from the main school/hotel is our nature reserve. There are now 2 cabins in the reserve, each with two bedrooms, seating area, shower and compostable latrine, private terrace and garden, small kitchen (though you can of course eat all meals at the main hotel) - these are ideal for families with kids who like a bit more space to run around! There are of course a few friendly rescued dogs to keep the kids happy!! We use solar power - for heated water in all of the showers as well as to provide electricity, conserve rainwater, have a number of recycling schemes and have started our own successful organic farm which provides some of the eggs, veggies, coffee consumed at the Mariposa. And much more. We use our income to maximise the employment of local people (currently employing 80 teachers, maintenance and kitchen staff) and undertake a number of projects in the local community. You can opt to volunteer at one of our community or environmental projects, living in a homestay with a local family. Amongst other projects, we are currently offering volunteer placements in the nature reserve, in local schools, with a day care project or with disabled children. You are also welcome to help out the Mariposa workers - whether feeding our rescued animals or cooking up our healthy meals. All of which is a great way to improve that Spanish! We have also recently opened, on another but close by site, a study centre specifically designed to cater for groups of students. We offer an individualized curriculum which can include Spanish classes, activities and classes on the history, culture and environment of Nicaragua. We can also arrange community service work for groups. Accommodation is in two eco built dormitories, each of which has 10 beds (bunk style). The eating/meeting hall is a lovely structure built of straw bales and thatched roofing. Classrooms face a terrace with great views of the Masaya volcano. Meals are always freshly cooked, often using organic veggies from our farm. And of course there are solar heated showers and solar powered electricity. ... more   less
