Its the only volcano we have visited where you get driven almost to the top. The views are good despite the haze erupting from the crater. The staircase was out of bounds as it needed repair which was a shame as it would have been nice to climb to the cross.
The visitors centre is interesting.
The park is one you can do without a guide but if you have one with you it makes it more interesting and a lot easier for those of us that dont do Spanish

My wife and I arranged for a tour of Volcan Masaya and Los Pueblos Blancos with Jessica of Buen Viaje Private Day Tours. We found them through Tripadvisor and were impressed by all of their favorable reviews.

Knowing we are ardent photographers, Jessica guided us to the ridge above Volcan Masaya for amazing views of this active volcano and the area surrounding it. Then we lunched at a very nice restaurant overlooking Laguna de Masaya. Later that day we made several stops through Los Pueblos Blancos. The highlight of the day was visiting a ceramic artist’s workshop where the technique used to create those distinctive non-glazed pieces was demonstrated. Afterwards we soaked in the view of Laguna de Apoyo from the lookout point above it. We covered a lot of ground in one day, but all the sites are relatively close to each other so the day was nicely paced.

Jessica’s guiding services, along with her insights on life in Nicaragua and good tips for restaurants and cafes in Granada, really enhanced our stay in that wonderful country.

The excursions that Buen Viaje Private Day Tours offer are informative, very well priced, and a great value.

Best travels,

Craig & Donna

You must pay 100 cords per non resident to get in. Locals pay 30 cords. Little kids free. This includes the visitor center. Toilets have no seats, bathroom totally cramped. Volcano spectacular. Wear sturdy shoes and leave the sandals in your backpack. We did not pay for a tour but you could and horseback tours are available. Loved it.

This is a great place to go if you love hiking. Note that you will need a guide also make sure to dress in layers and wear good shoes as it was quite cold at the top and challenging walking. The road up the volcano is a experience in itself. You definitely will not walk up. Very challenging driving, as it is very steep. The top was very misty and cold the day we were there. Please note again that just because it is very warm below the temperature above won't be, as many were not dressed appropiately. There are numerous walks and nature to observe on the trails. It is a hiking dream.

We had a tour of the museum before going to the volcano. It is good to go to the museum to get understanding of the history of the area and why there is this huge cross at the top of the volcano. The volcano area is impressive unfortunately you cannot walk up to the huge cross because earthquakes have made the stairs unsafe. It is definitely a place to tour while you are in Nicaragua.
