The visitor's center is awesome, with tons of information about the park and lake. Many of the exhibits are interactive so the kids really enjoyed it as well.

When you get out to the crater it's difficult to see much due to the steam but that makes it even more dramatic. There is a higher peek you can climb for a different view but it was closed the day we were there.

Side note - the bee hives lining the trees on the way up are really dramatic!

The fact that you can drive all the way to the top of this volcano, it is worth your time to go there and be impressed by what this earth produces!
The park authority charges a small amount of money for non-nationals, puts a little red band around your wrist and makes you go to the visitor center to sign your names. Then at the gate they give you a helmet. All this seems to make you prepare for a risky business, which makes it a bit exciting. At the parking lot it is indicated that you should park in a way that you can drive away in a hurry. Apparently there was an explosion in 2012.
The visitor center has general information about volcanoes in Nicaragua and also various information on vegetation painted on beautiful murals.
The volcano is constantly smoking and there is a very weak smell of sulfur (compared to other volcanoes I have been to). The crater is amazingly huge, and in the smoke it has the appearance of having a lake down there, but it is simply very very deep and you cannot see the bottom from where you stand. And you do not want to get closer to find out how deep it could be! Besides, you are not allowed to!
The vegetation further down the road includes trees with white flowers, which makes it very beautiful against the blue sky. In addition to black lava, there seemed to be remnants of a forest-fire in the area. There was actually nobody to ask to verify this kind of information. I did notice some local people selling local artifacts such as jewelry, and one woman even selling local snacks.

“Spectacular Volcano in a line of spectacular volcanoes”
Reviewed May 4, 2013

Volcan Masaya is not one to be missed by lovers of Volcanoes, and if you came to Nicaragua how you not love them. Take the chicken bus that goes from Granada to Managua (or vice versa) and just ask to be let off at the entrance. It is super cheap (18 cord as of May 2013) and then just walk the park (100 cord entrance fee) to the visitors center and then on to the crater. The walk is three miles but generally a fellow tourist will give a lift. The crater is fantastic! The stairway to the replica cross is closed due to worries about that part of the crater collapsing in, but it is still not a sight to be missed in Nicaragua.

“If you visit Masaya, you must make a trip to the School of Ceramics”
Reviewed May 3, 2013

My sister and I made a trip to the school of ceramics. It was a very nice tour. They gave us a tour of the facilities and we watched the process of making the pieces of ceramics from start to finish.

Afterward, we went to the gallery and picked out beautiful pieces to buy. They have very, very cool vases, mugs, vessels and other pieces of art for purchase. The amount of time and effort that goes into each piece makes each one special and unique.

We ended up purchasing so many pieces (at great costs), that we chose to ship everything home. They offer shipping for convenience.

I highly recommend making a visit to this place.

“Fun park!”
Reviewed April 21, 2013

They have worked to improve the visitor center and its neat to be able to go right up to the edge of an active volcanic crater. Highly recommend also taking the cave tour. The guides are friendly and knowledgeable.
