Owner description: Nicaragua Market is a small company that offers authentic Nicaraguan goods. We work closely to local artisans and the price you see is a reflection of our fair value after partnering with our artists. When you purchase Nicaragua Market products you are helping to ensure that the trade of local Nicaraguan artistry remains a viable small business.

A good crafts market, but clearly designed for the people coming from the cruise ships and school trips, with few locals doing shopping. It is a place for foreigners to get souvenirs. One needs to sort through the locally made goods and the generic crafts imported from wherever in Asia (but that is a common element in any 'craft' market around the world), along with the poor quality (and fake cuban) cigars, repetitive t-shirts, etc. It isn't a 'tribal' market or local craft people selling their goods, so much as it is re-sellers selling decent craft and souvenirs to foreigners. The selection, at least, of souvenirs is very large.

We stopped here on our whirlwind trip to Nicaragua. the day we went was quite quiet. The are multiple shops/stands that sell a variety of items. We got a couple of purses and some tinkets for our nephews. They do sell art, wood carvings, some food. The sellers were not pushy. They typically do not take American Dollars so have Nicaraguan money available. As with these types of markets, you can haggle. the market was clean and I felt safe being there. We did hire a guide to help us.

Masaya Craft Market is a short ride from Granada, Nicaragua and can easily be arranged from your hotel. The market is located in an old Spanish colonial fort and is full of vendors selling local crafts of all types - shoes, handbags, coffee, beautiful wooden bowls and other wood crafts, oil and water color paintings as well as textiles and baskets.

We stayed for about 4 hours and that was ample time to shop and have a quick meal in one of the little local eatries located in the market. Tours to the market can also be combined with a trip to masaya Volcano national Park for some hiking and the small town of San Juan de Oriente to see the pottery makers at work and buy local pottery.

Well worth the trip and we came home with many beautiful things.

I had expected to be attacked by sellsmen, but this market was actually really nice to visit. None was pushy and it was not crowded at all. The place was clean and we also took a coffee break inside the building. they sell all kind of things including coffee, paintings, cigars, wood art, bags, etc etc...

Best place to stop for crafts! Great selection and most prices were negotiable. I bought paitings for less than $20 each that were beautiful! Would recommend at least 2 hours to walk through the entire market
