This is a fantastic facility built in the late 19th century as the City's Federal Customs House. An addition was built in the early 2000s which allowed the research facilities and the museum to expand. The facility holds the McClung Historical Collection of the Knox County Public Library, which is a boon to anyone researching family history in the region. There's a charge for the museum, but not to use the McClung Collection.

This is a jewel among the history museums. Well organized, educational and OK for all ages.
Take sufficient time to visit. We only had 2 hours and could not complete the whole visit.
A MUST SEE in Knoxville and free on sunday afternoon.

Brst historical museum I've visited. It started with the Indians and the frontiersmen and went through the1950's. Covered agriculture, war, music, technology and culture. The was also a very good exhibit of the work of Tennessee artists.

Nice new facility. Exhibits are informative and varied even if not as thorough. I left with many more questions. Armed with a smartphone, the museum works.

If you like local history and museums you would be hard pressed to beat this one. The exhibits are well done and very informative. The lay out is excellent with each area focusing on a specific event or topic and it follows a time line. You can take in as much or as little as you want because there are detailed note books along the way you can read or just pass by and enjoy just the exhibit as an overview I did a little of both depending on the subject. They cover from the first steps of the white man on the land in the 1500s up to the worlds fair in 1982. At 5 bucks plus a few to park I thought it was a very good deal and well worth the time. You could spend as little as an hour or upwards of 3 depending on how much you want to read and learn.
