Description: We believe less processed food tastes better. Not only does it taste better, it's much healthier too. You'll notice this difference in our house made dressings and handcrafted pizzas, as well as in our colorful salads and sandwiches. Fresh produce from East Tennessee farmers like Hines Valley Farm, Mountain Meadows Farm and Colvin Family Farm is featured in our daily specials. Well known for our vegan and vegetarian dishes, our menu has plenty for the carnivore. All of our proteins are nitrate/nitrite free, all natural and antibiotic free. Our house made lamb sausage is cooked in small batches to ensure freshness. Our sister bakery, Flour Head Bakery, prepares all of the Tomato Head's desserts and breads (including gluten free!) Each morning. By using unbleached and unbromated King Arthur Flour, we create healthier and better tasting pizza dough and sandwich breads. We also can easily accommodate your dietary needs. Whether it's a nut allergy, a preference for vegan fare or a gluten sensitivity, our staff will craft a dish to suit your tastes.

We were staying in Knoxville for one evening on our way to Charleston and happen to find Tomato Head. After looking at the menu I was a bit skeptical but decided on Pizza. My wife got the five cheese and I created my own. I must say this was one of the best pizzas we had ever eaten and we love our pizza. The red sauce was the best part of the whole pizza in my opinion and the crust was a close second. If you are in Knoxville and have the time this is a must try!

It's tough to find a good vegetarian-friendly restaurant, so when you find one (like Tomato Head), you always want to go back and try everything else on the menu. I had the tofu sandwich w/spinach, sprouts, cheese, tomato & pesto on ciabatta and really enjoyed it; proof that just because it's between two halves of a bun, it doesn't have to be unhealthy to taste good & be satisfying.

Spacious atmosphere with high ceilings & art on the walls. The fastest service ever and the server was friendly & helpful in pointing out areas of interest in the area.

Best for: young health-conscious diners who find the location convenient.
Could most benefit from: fun decor which would improve the acoustics.

We ate early on a weekend night and were seated and had our orders taken quickly. At the beginning of the evening we were able to hear each other easily, but as more diners arrived it was more difficult to enjoy conversation.

The order taker was a cute girl who was friendly and helpful in answering questions.

The highlights of the menu for the health-conscious are: antibiotic-free chicken, whole grain breads, tofu and soy cheese options. Strangely lacking were organic salad greens.

You can build your own pizza with interesting ingredient options. Pre-made pizza combinations weigh heavily toward pesto or white pizza bases.

I got a burrito, which was rather uninspiring and a bit overpriced. One of my friends got a pizza and enjoyed that.

We had a late breakfast/early lunch at the other Tomato Head location near West Town Mall; we like the atmosphere better than at the Market Square location (due to a quieter interior), but the same wonderful food is available here.

The hostess seemed irritated when we asked for a booth instead of a table (even though there were many more vacants booths), but she'd apparently forgotten by the time we left, when she thanked us with a smile.

The food was good as always. There were 3 of us: one ordered an omelet breakfast; one, a sandwich, and one, a burrito. All three items were tasty and the presentation was attractive. Our server, Oliver, was attentive and patient, checking with us several times to see if we needed anything and keeping out water glasses filled. The omelet consumer protested (after eating the omelet) that the ham had been omitted (the sandwich eater said the he'd seen ham in the omelet, which the other person had picked out and eaten separately); however, Oliver was the perfect server and had the price of the omelet reduced.

Two of us eat in Knoxville restaurants from time to time (I'm from out of town), and the Tomato Head is one of our top 3-4 choices.

Knoxville is not exactly known for progressive, vegan- or even vegetarian-inspired cuisine options, but the local chain Tomato Head menu includes quite a few vegetables in the form of salad ingrediants, pizza toppings and quesadilla- or burrito-filling options. Our party of five was fairly cheerily welcomed and seated promptly, with our needs competently and astutely met by our good-natured server, Alyssa. She patiently answered our questions about whether or not dishes we were interested in ordering included offending ingrediants or not, kept our water glasses filled and handled multiple interruptions during the ordering process with aplomb, as one of our party (well, me) thought of more and more things to order.

Antibiotic-free chicken and whole grain tortillas are rarities available here, with the food fairly artfully prepared. They proudly served regional micro-brews, also a rarity, including the well-balanced satisfyingly hoppy Saw Works English Pale Ale made right in Knoxville.

The only moderately impactful drawback was the poor acoustic qualities of the space, which led to a cacophonous echoing in the dining room, making conversation difficult.

Bottom line: artfully prepared, healthful options at a somewhat noisy ma'n'pa venue.
