“Great place to hang out”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 28, 2010

Market Square is a great place to start or end your visit to Knoxville. Lots of restaurants, shopping, etc. We have been down several times for special events like the Sundown in the City concerts, Shakespeare on the Square, First Night New Year's Eve celebration and the International Biscuit Festival!

Parking is free on weeknights, weekends and holidays.

“a nice change of pace”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 4, 2010

Most of Knoxville isn't particularly friendly to walking or biking, but this area and the surrounding areas are. I love the restaurants and the funky shops. I love love love Sundown in the city, a free concert event held on Thursday nights throughout the Summer. Everyone is much more relaxed here as compared to other parts of the city, which I appreciate. The Farmers' Market is also held here on Wednesdays and Saturdays from May until November. Tons of local farmers and artisans converge on the square to offer some amazing food and art. Parking can be tricky, but certain lots are free on weekends and after 6PM. Do a little research before you go because there is always something going on down there and its usually lots of fun.

“A fun open air mall”

We had just a few hours to "see" Knoxville, so went to Market Square. It was in the evening and we were happy to discover that the Market Square Parking Garage is free after 7 ( and I think on weekends). We enjoyed walking around the square which consists mainly of restaurants, but there are also some shops mixed in. At the far end there is a small delightful park with some statuary, that we enjoyed walking through. We then walked down the next street over which also had a lot of restaurants. There were a lot of people out enjoying the evening together. I thought it was worth seeing, especially if you're looking for a place to eat.

“It's okay.”

Market Square has many restaurants (the Tomato Head being the best one) and a few bars (Preservation Pub being the best). There are also a few shops, but there just isn't a whole lot going on. It's quite small and it's not really worth visiting unless you're already downtown.

Because downtown Knoxville is near homeless shelters, many homeless people are in Market Square, especially in the evening and early morning. I used to be a runner and I ran through Market Square around 4:45 or 5:00 AM many times and I never had any problems. It's a fairly safe area, but you need to be aware that homeless people do frequent this area.

“Home Sweet Home”

As a new resident of Market Sqare, I am biased when I say it is a great place to hang out (in 3-4 months). More resturants and shops will be opened and the weekly outdoor concert series will start up for the summer months. It will be a great place to hang out and enjoy the weather, passer bys, and a cool drink.

I suggest checking Market Square out, esp this summer when you can see a live band, drink a beer, and shop for a unique gifts all in the same city block.
