Anybody coming to Knoxville should make sure to visit Market Square at least once - It truly is the heart of the town. There are too many events that happen on the square throughout the year to name them all - Highlights include the biweekly farmers market in the summer (Wednesday and Saturday), a Christmas market with an iceskating rink in December, and multiple admission free open air events (Shakespeare on the square, movies on the square, live music events). Make sure to check online or in the town's event newspaper (Metropulse) for things going on. Even if there are no events scheduled, the square is worth a visit. It is lined by a variety of small stores and restaurants where you can find something for every taste (Asian fusion, pizza, pasta, Southern kitchen, Cafe fare, Sandwiches...). Also, there is a very nice pub ("Preservation pub") - a Knoxville classic which stretches over 3 stories (smoking 1st floor, non-smoking 2nd floor, and a very nice roof terrace overlooking the Knoxville skyline and the square). The square is in close proximity to multiple parking garages which offer free parking after 6 p.m. during the week and most of the day almost all weekends. Also, the square is in walking distance from other Knoxville attractions (gay street, Tennessee theatre, old city, World's Fair park), so once you parked your car you can literally "go from there".

Nice little area, lots of bar and dining choices. Live music in the courtyard as well. Seemed to be family friendly.

I met a friend here for a brief visit while in Knoxville for a business trip. The parking in the nearby garage was free on the weekends and easy to get to. The Square is delightful with all kinds of small, funky shops and boutiques as well as restaurants and a few bars. Small children in bathing suits were running through the interesting fountain that comes right out of the plaza.

There were homeless people but at least to my friend, they were 'their' homeless people - regulars who hawk tabloid newspaper about the issues of the homeless. Before we ordered our breakfast, from a restaurant on the Square, my friend got a to-go cinnamon roll for the homeless guy on a nearby bench. After our breakfast she ordered another roll for the other guy who was on the other end of the Square. This says something cool about my friend but also to the safety of the area.

There was random urban art on the building walls of an alley that was just amazing. There is a beautiful little part area with all kinds of interesting sculpture. I very much enjoyed seeing these.
