“Great place for hiking with children”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 8, 2014

A friend took us here when we were visiting and it was a great place to take children hiking. They have several different trails with different scenery. There are woods, lakes and a rock quarry to explore. It is a short drive from downtown but you feel like you are miles away from it all.

“a great place to hike and enjoy nature”

Ijams contains many different experiences--quarries, hikes, nature. It's hard to believe you are almost downtown. Definitely worth visiting if you are an outdoor enthusiast.

Absolutely beautiful, lovely walking trails and very close to the water. I loved walking around here on a crisp Fall day, I would definitely come back here!

“Great place for kids of all ages in an urban wilderness”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 26, 2013

I discovered this hidden gem close to downtown Knoxville several months ago when I was looking for a new biking location. The Will Skelton Greenway makes its way through Ijams Nature Center and connects to the Forks of the River WildLife Management Area. Ijams Nature Center has a an excellent variety of programs and demonstrations suited for all age groups and things that parents and kids can do together. In addition to the Will Skelton Greenway there are also many trails suitable for mountain biking. This is a wonderful place to go and take a camping chair, a thermos of coffee and a good book or take a picnic and use of the available tables. There are also tables and chairs on the patio on the backside of the gift shop in the Visitors Center where one may grab a coffee and chill for awhile. It is very peaceful. It is located just across the Tennessee River from downtown Knoxville. I take the James White Parkway to get there but you can easily access it through Island Home by way of the Gay Street bridge. Island Home has a delightful variety of housing architectures which are well worth the drive. There are niminal charges for some of the programs ands since this is a non-profit there are also memberships available. There is no charge to enter the grounds or the Visitor Center. A tip for cyclists using a road bike or hybrid bike - park at the Tennis courts in Island Home next to the river and access the Will Skelton Greenway at this point and ride toward Ijams. You will parallel the Downtown Island Home airport and after a series of switchbacks will enter the Ijams Nature Center. Continue through the Nature Center by remaining on the Will Skelton Greenway and enter the Forks of the River Wildlife Management Area. You will be rewarded with vistas of the Tennessee River on one side and managed plantings of corn and spectacular array of sunflowers in the fields with plenty of song birds to serenade you as well as the occasional sighting of a deer or turkey. At the end of the greenway you will come to the bluff that has a breath taking view of the joining of the French Broad and Tennessee Rivers. This is a wonderful bike ride for all ages.

“Great Nature Facility”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 26, 2013

It's been awhile since I've visited Ijams but it's a wonderful nature facility. There is so much to see here that you do not see in your own yards and outside area. The staff put on all types of nature walks in the day time and at night. Great for kids!!! Such a wonderful place to just walk and see and learn about our world of " outdoors". If you have never been, it's a must. If you like nature and being out in the midst of it you'll love this place and if you are not a nature person, it just might change your mind. Spring comes alive with all the flowers BUT winter with all the hillside covered in blooming Hellebores is a sight to see.
