“Urban Wilderness”

I love Ijams Nature Center for its' proximity to my home and the activities it offers. They have long had biking/hiking trails but now offer bike rentals and canoe rentals. Plus, they offer a wide range of activities for children and special events throughout the year; especially educational relative to the environment.

“Amazing and in the middle of Knoxville”
Reviewed November 5, 2012

I have a few hours to kill while in Knoxville and found a couple of reference to this on the web. It was really amazing as I was walking through the park how close to downtown Knoxville I was.

The staff was very friendly and gave me a nice overview of the trail system including a few tidbits not on the web site.

The trails are interconnected so you can literally do anything from less than a mile to several miles depending on how you splice the trails together. If you don’t want to hike there are a number of other activities on offer but I really cannot address those.

Great place to bring the family, the dog or even just yourself if you need a place to go for the day. Beautiful colors during the fall....so make sure to bring your camera!

“Nature Up Close, Explained by Those Who Know”
Reviewed October 26, 2012

Ijams has numerous events of interest to us - hummingbird bandings, owl prowls, wildflower walks, etc. Great indoor displays that are well kept up. Lyn Bales is the naturalist who writes a blog regularly with literary references, his color photos, and a sharp view on most everything in nature. Paul James is the executive director who has numerous projects like passenger pigeons. The recent addition of Ross' Quarry is a must see. Some events have a fee, free usually for those with a membership which we do.

“Nature on display -- and to enjoy”
Reviewed October 19, 2012

Just a two-mile bike ride from the World's Fair Park area. A nice respite among beautiful natural habitat.

Birding, eco friendly displays, great stuff for kids, quarry, hiking, walking, biking, canoeing -- all great stuff!
