Owner description: In our age of fast-moving technology, it seems unlikely that thousands of audience members could spend a weekend mesmerized by the voices of storytellers. But that's exactly what happens in Jonesborough every year, starting the first Friday in October and running through the weekend. The National Storytelling Festival began in 1973 when 60 people came to hear a few Appalachian tales from the back of a hay wagon parked beside the town courthouse. In the decades since, those 60 people have grown to 10,000, and the hay wagon has been replaced by large, circus-like tents raised throughout the town. Those first mountain tales are supplemented now with stories from around the globe, spiked with the flair of poetry, blues, ballads and banjo. The Festival encompasses a wealth of cultures, traditions and styles- a world of stories within one small, historic town.

Very interesting concert! The stories were entertaining and funny. We have been several times and definitely will go again.

I am not able to attend this any linger due to the very high entrance fee. I would live to go to the ghost story event, but cannot afford it.

I don't like crowds, but I always wanted to go to the International Storytelling Center. The teller in residence was great. The center was beautiful. The staff was extremely patient courteous and helpful.

Every week from June - October the story teller is different. Our story teller was fun. He told stories with music and puppets. The seating is auditorium style and all seats are good.

The International Storytelling Center is best known for the National Storytelling Festival that it puts on each October. But that’s not the only thing they do. There is a 26 week series called “Storytelling Live” that features a one week residency of a nationally known storyteller. They have daily matinees and an occasional evening performance or workshop. There is also a gift shop with lots of storytelling CDs and books.

The performance space is intimate--about 100 seats--compared to the 1,000 seat tents in October. It’s a great place to hear great storytelling.
