I searched for the top-rated restaurant in Johnson City and found Scratch Brick Oven. We went and were not disppointed! At first we weren't sure how to order or what to order! It took a few minutes of reading the signs and scratch pads (where you order) to figure out what to do! The atmosphere was pretty cool inside the restaurant, with some retro vibes! The breadsticks and pizza were delicious, very different from typical pizza that you get from the chain restaurants. Overall, it was a really unique experience and we will definitely visit again when we are in the area!

I have been to Scratch dozens of times and I am continually impressed with the pizza. The brick oven that they use really adds a nice texture to all the homemade and great quality ingredients that they use. The place is a little rough around the edges, so don't take relatives who have problems with hippie children making their food. Otherwise, bring your own six pack, kick back, and make use of the turntable and record selection while these people make you an awesome pizza.

This is a pizza place like no other in 100 miles radius or more! Their pizzas are all handmade and fired in brick ovens. The toppings are all fresh and in many cases, home-made. Forget about canned ingredients . . . and the usual run of the mill choices. All of their meats are homemade - capicola, peperone, Andouille sausage, smoked chicken . . . and the list goes on.

You can call in your order and when you arrive, grab it and sit outside on one of the tables or inside and spin a record or two from their free collection waiting to go through.

The prices are amazing as well - we got a pizza with 4 toppings and a side of cheesesticks for $20.

If you try them once you will see why the line is what it is on the weekends . . . but again, call in the order and eat it there . . . it will change your opinion of what pizza should be!

Today my awesome niece graduated from ETSU. Her parents had her a graduation party afterwards & her choice was Scratch Pizza. I had never before tried it. Why???? It was simply delicious. I would say the best pizza I've ever eaten. It just wasn't greasy & yucky like chain pizza places. Pesto, feta, bruschetta yum! There were 4 different varieties & all were great (yes, I had to try all 4, don't judge). :).
Definitely recommend this place.

.......unique experience. A small, old house on the corner of Unaka & North Roan with a brick oven, unique menu, unique, way of ordering, and a fabulous vinyl record collection makes for an interesting experience. Reading the reviews, it looked as though many didn't enjoy their experience here, but we didn't fall into that category, although I could see how it could turn into a frustrating experience if it were really crowded or if you are expecting a waiter/waitress to be constantly checking on you.

You come in and there are several pads with menus on them for you to check what you want (and in some cases, DON"T WANT). We opted for a French crust pizza with onions, garlic, red sauce, capicola, smoked beef, mozzarella, onions and spinach. Garlicky, savory, smokey, a little sweet from the red sauce, and a crunchy yet chew crust , it was outstanding, and the leftovers were even better for breakfast the next day. You are free to BYOB, but there are a variety of soft drinks (some unusual) in a cooler that are available. There was Coke available in glass bottles that day, so all was right with the world. We didn't have to wait too long, as we were there at 1:30 in the afternoon, but they have a fabulous record collection that you can browse through and stick on the record player if you choose, and I chose Hendrix's Are You Experienced for a sublime dining experience.

Prices are reasonable for what I considered to be an outstanding, out of the ordinary pizza. Parking would be tough during peak hours, and you need to pay attention to the signs lest you get your vehicle towed away.

Overall, we loved it and plan to do another late lunch here one day soon.
