Never expected to see anything like this. Just stumbled upon the signage on I-26 near Johnson City, TN while driving to our family gathering in Maryland. This is actually an active dig site for some really interesting fossil specimens. There is a modest admission fee. A short but interesting film explains the site. The exhibits are extremely well done and educational and the staff was very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. The dig site is still producing specimens and there is a large laboratory area that can be viewed by visitors where specimens are researched, identified, cataloged and prepared for exhibit. Allow at least one hour but more likely around 2 to do it all and do it right.

This is a very small museum, but low cost admission makes it worth a side trip. The employees are very nice and where good with the small children. You can walk out to dig site. This is nice, especially for any child interested in paleontology. It took maybe an hour to go through the museum, because it is small. There are not many dinosaur bones, as it displays actual fossils found at the site. If you are driving through it is definitely worth the stop.

My 8 year old son enjoyed this. The Peanuts exhibit was much more interactive and worth the extra money. There are some interesting facts to learn and the staff is very knowledgable.

A not-well-known GEM! Great displays, interesting movie, available tours of the dig areas with a student paleontologist, lots of research activities to watch, all in an attractive building - what more could you ask for? It's a "one of the few in the world place". In the town of Gray, about 2 miles west of I-26 just south of I-81 near Johnson City TN.
Bring binoculars as well as a camera.

What a great opportunity to have a fossil sight like this located so close to a populated area. The State of TN and ETSU have done a great job of preserving the sight and making it so accessible to so many. The museum is well laid out and informative and the tour of the site and the explanation of how the fossils are unearthed, identified and cataloged is very interesting. This is a wonderful informative stop that takes a few hours. We are fortunate that this sight has been preserved and it's good to take advantage of it. The display would be interesting to young and old alike.
