My wife and I normally go to Flemings when we want an upscale dinner. However, we live in Franklin, and my wife is pregnant and didn't want to drive into Nashville. We decided to give Sperry's a try.
We were both thinking we would be disappointed. However, after it was all said and done, we did not regret going.
The first thing you notice is that the decor seems a little old school. I know the original restaurant is in Belle Meade where the crowd is an older generation. But I think they should have modernized the decor in the Franklin location. Also, they only have tables, and no booths. My wife and I both prefer booths, as we feel like they are more private.
The service was very good. Almost a little too good, because they kept trying to fill our glasses and clear our plates the second it appeared that it might need to be done. Don't get me wrong, I didn't really mind this, and I would easily prefer this over having to wait for water even 30 seconds. I am only mentioning it to let you know that they try to be attentive.
Almost all their Entrees come with a salad, but not a side. At Flemings, they do not come with either. If you want a salad, then Sperrys is probably a little better deal. I ordered the Wedge salad, and my wife got the salad bar. I took a look at the salad bar, and it was good, but I don't want to go to a nice restaurant and fix my own food. Also, I like a good wedge salad over most others.
My wife had the Two Lobster tails and she really enjoyed them. They brought the butter out in a little pan with an candle or oil fueled flame under it, to keep the butter warm. I thought that was nice, but I have honestly never gone to a nice restaurant and gotten lobster. I always get steak. So, other restaurants might do that.
I ordered the 6oz filet and 98% crab cake. Both were VERY good. I don't think the steak was any better than other upscale restaurants, but it was on par. For sides, we ordered the cream spinach and the lobster Mac'n'Cheese. They were both good, but not excellent. There was probably enough for two in each one.
We normally don't get desert. But since my wife is 7 months pregnant, and it was our anniversary (we weren't going on a trip this year), we actually ordered two deserts. We had the bananas foster, which as anyone knows, is a good little side table show when they flambe it. It tasted good. My wife was a little worried about the alcohol in it, even though it should have burned off, so she wanted the Sticky Toffee Pudding. I tasted some of it, and where the glaze saturated the cake, it was really good.
To top it all off, this was on Saturday, a day after Valentines, which happens to be when our anniversary is. While we really like Flemings, our worst experience there was on a Valentines weekend. We understand why, but that is what made the service stand out at Sperrys.
I believe we will be adding Sperry's as a equal alternative to other upscale places.
