Dotson's has been around a while. I learned that they formerly occupied an older building across the street and closer to downtown. The current building presents a dichotomy - it's located in an un-imposing modular building with a generic 1960's "post Googie" boring ambiance, but serves up food like a 1920's-30's Southern restaurant. A little "retro-designing" would really give the place a boost.

Food is great, though. Southern style comfort food, substantial breakfasts, desserts better than home made. And very reasonable prices. It's the kind of place that Loveless Motel used to be like before it got "discovered." Just remember to bring cash - no credit cards accepted.

We enjoy visiting Franklin. Quaint shops and very neat. We've eaten at Puckett's Grocery, and Boathouse. My husband heard from a local that Dotson's served good meals. So on this trip to Franklin, we wanted to satisfy our curiosity. On that particular corner there is plenty of parking. We asked an older couple leaving about the food. They really enjoyed it, and portions substantial. Upon entering, we were instructed to seat ourselves. The lunch crowd was thinning out so there were booths available. Looking over the menu, I noticed that different specials were offered everyday. That is a good value. With the entree comes your choice of two, or three vegetables, and cornbread or biscuits. I ordered the BBQ Chicken, and my husband the Roast Beef. While waiting for our food, and sipping our drinks, we had a chance to look around. The interior is much like the exterior. It is dated. I do not think this place has gone through much of a renovation in years, but that adds to its character, and charm. The booth upholstery was clean with no apparent damage, as were the tables and chairs. Framed photos of Nashville's musical stars hung on the paneled walls alongside guitars, and other memorabilia. Our food arrived hot, and well placed on the ceramic plates. The chicken breast with a glaze of sauce was so tender it fell apart with the touch of my knife. My husband's roast beef was just like Sunday dinner at Mom's. Each vegetable sides were served hot in their own dish. The portions were more than we usually eat, but we left nothing on our plates. If a home cooked meal is in order, this is the place for you. Bring cash or check. No credit cards accepted.

A little gem in Franklin. Off the central drag of main street but absolutely worth seeking out.

We went there for breakfast that looked very interesting but tried the lunch menu Fried chicken, mashed potatoes & gravy and English peas were fabulous as were chicken and dumplings.

Remember when you go that it's in the food not the decor.

The title says it all. Better than Loveless. Better than Champy's down in Chattanooga, and Champy's is pretty good. This and the fresh vegetables is a little bit of heaven!

Dotson's has been around forever, its there down home cooking that keeps folks coming back. Whether your looking for breakfast. lunch, or an early dinner you can find something to your liking. Don't expect much in terms of atmosphere, the place is old and it shows.
