“A solemn tribute to the fallen”

Confederate Memorial Park at Winstead Hill
Ranked #19 of 66 things to do in Franklin
Attraction details

This site turned out to be much more than we had anticipated. There were a half dozen stone monuments commemorating the 5 Confederate generals who died at the battle of Franklin, a memorial in tribute to the valor of the Army of Tennessee, a monument to an artillery officer killed on the site, and a shelter at the top of the hill with a diorama showing how the battle played out on the landscape before you. We found it to be a most solemn and respectful tribute to those brave Americans who answered the call of duty to a cause they believed in.

I used to belong to the Sons of Confederate Sam Davis camp that maintains this park and I can tell you they really take this place seriously. It's well kept and is a must-see for all Civil War aficionados. The walk to the top isn't wheel-chair friendly and you may need to stay close to your children but to stand where it all happened (on the Confederate side) at the battle of Franklin is not to be missed!

I have visited this place several times before, and it is one of my favorite places in Franklin. From the vantage point, you can see Franklin and imagine what it was like when the Confederates charged down the hill for their beloved cause. It is very well kept and there is even a cell phone walking tour you can use.

You can really see where the battle took place from an un- obstructed view of then entire area. Not hard to imagine what Hood saw as the battle began. The monument itself needs some work, fresh paint and polish on the brass maps showing battle details

The memorial plaques at this staging ground for the Battle of Franklin are a grim reminder of what this battle cost the Confederates. Combined with the Lotz & Carter House Tours it brings the full scene 'to life'.
