Owner description: The Carter House was built around 1830 by Fountain Branch Carter. By the time of the Civil War it was a large agricultural operation. In the years leading up to the Civil War nearly thirty slaves lived and worked on the farm. The Carter home and property was consumed by the Battle of Franklin on November 30, 1864. One of the Carter sons was mortally wounded during the terrible fighting and died in the house two days after the battle. House tours and battlefield tours are provided daily and 360 days a year.

A jewel in the main section of historic Franklin. Ask for the combo tickets. Cheaper. Across the street from The Lutz house. And near the the Carnton Plantation. Read "The Widow of the South." It is about the lady who owned the plantation and who maintained the graves in the cemetery for the rest of her life. Wearing black, and dedicated to the care of the plantation and its historic relevance to the Battle of Franklin.

We have been to Franklin several times over the years, but never took the time to visit the Carter House until now. I never knew the history of the Battle of Franklin, but visiting this house, and listening to our very knowledgeable tour guide, brought the battle to life for us. Our guide helped us to visualize exactly what the Carter family probably experienced while hiding in the basement of the house with the battle raging overhead.
Being able to walk the grounds and see the outbuildings with the bullet holes still intact was amazing. If you like history, and particularly the Civil War era, you will like this place.
We didn't have enough time to take advantage of the value ticket, which allows you entrance to all 3 historic homes, but if you have an entire afternoon free, I would recommend purchasing this one. Also be sure to wear comfortable shoes if you plan to walk the grounds. It is very uneven and there are some holes in the ground.

During our tour of the house, our guide went into great detail about the events of the November day when the Battle of Franklin took place, and what it was like for the Carter family who found themselves at the very center of one of the most intense battles of the entire Civil War. Our guide absolutely brought the story to life for us.
