Owner description: The Carter House was built around 1830 by Fountain Branch Carter. By the time of the Civil War it was a large agricultural operation. In the years leading up to the Civil War nearly thirty slaves lived and worked on the farm. The Carter home and property was consumed by the Battle of Franklin on November 30, 1864. One of the Carter sons was mortally wounded during the terrible fighting and died in the house two days after the battle. House tours and battlefield tours are provided daily and 360 days a year.

Carter House is a historical story not often heard when Civil War history is told. As a result of the tour you will have a heartfelt understanding of the trails and tribulations of one family during the Battle of Franklin.

You have to buy the 3 pack. They were all amazing + worth seeing. The lotz house was our favorite followed by the Carter house then Carnton. All are worth checking out!!!

Absolute must civil war stop. I highly recommend the 3 home value ticket. (they don't expire should you not be able to make all 3 in the same day) The battle here was brief and the skirmish minor compared to the "famous" battles but if you are a true civil war enthusiast this is a must see. My tour guide Bobby was outstanding and from speaking to another visitor that had a different guide the accolades were the same. The tragic story of Todd carter related to us by Bobby in the parlor was unbelievable.
I recommend parking at this location and starting here as early in the morning as possible for the tour then walk down the street to Lotz house for the tour there. Then take the short drive to Carnton Plantation to complete the 3 home tour.

You will love this tour as there is so much history on the Carter house grounds. Tour guide was very informative and knowledgeable! Pay the $30 for the 3 house tour, well worth it!

Outstanding experience in Franklin. Well done tours of 3 historic sites associated with the Battle of Franklin. Buy the pass for all 3. They all complement each other. Plan on most of the day.
