Owner description: Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park protects the land that was the location of several important historic events that occurred in the late 18th century. Leaving the English colonies, settlers began arriving along the Watauga Old Fields, in search of a new life on what was Cherokee land. The park offers quality educational programs throughout the year telling the stories of the Watauga Association, Transylvania Purchase, Cherokee War of 1776, the Overmountain Men and so much more! John Carter, one of the primary political, military and business leaders of this era, and his son Landon, built a home, the Carter Mansion, three miles from Sycamore Shoals. This structure is the oldest standing frame house in Tennessee, dating back to the mid to late 1770s.

The programming at this park is great. This is the #1 park in the system. Staff is pleasant and more than helpful. Gift shop has some kid's stuff, nice stuff, and scholarly works. Their activities through the year are well worth a trip to see -- Liberty outdoor drama, indian festival, celtic celebration.

I went to this park after visiting Bristol Caverns in Bristol, TN (which my kids 8 & 9 loved) so I was a bit worried going to a park after the thrill of a CAVE!!!

However, my worries were competely abated almost immediately. Right when we arrived, they were about to shoot off a real 1800's canon...my kids were mezmorized. It was fascinating watching the men prepare the canon and then experiencing the blast of a genuine antique military weapon.

There is the coolest fortified civil war period homestead. It consists of fencing that is approximately 12 foot high, 400 foot lengths assembled in a sqaure just as the homesteads were in that time period. Buidlings representative of those from 200 years ago, are placed approximatle 30-40 feet apart. Kids can go in and explore each of these sturctures, complete with spy-like rifle holes (to "discourage" intruders). David and his son Matthew, both volunteers who were dressed in garb distinct from the time period, were just wonderful. Matthew showed my kids around the buildings, filling their heards with interesting fact and history. There were other men and women who were gold mines of history in the area. And the women were sewing outfits that ladies and girls would wear.

The park also has an inground pool, a playground, a historic walking trail, a butterfly garden, a museum (which was actually being renovated), and a picnic area.

Sycamore Shoal is definitely a fun place to spend a day.
