Recommended length of visit: 2-3 hours
Owner description: Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park protects the land that was the location of several important historic events that occurred in the late 18th century. Leaving the English colonies, settlers began arriving along the Watauga Old Fields, in search of a new life on what was Cherokee land. The park offers quality educational programs throughout the year telling the stories of the Watauga Association, Transylvania Purchase, Cherokee War of 1776, the Overmountain Men and so much more! John Carter, one of the primary political, military and business leaders of this era, and his son Landon, built a home, the Carter Mansion, three miles from Sycamore Shoals. This structure is the oldest standing frame house in Tennessee, dating back to the mid to late 1770s.

The 2 mile hike along the river also has a fitness trail - fun for the entire family.

In September, the Over Mountain Men gather to recreate the march to Stone Mt, GA where a decisive battle of the Revolutionary War was fought.

The last 3 weekends in July is the live outdoor drama (state outdoor drama of TN) telling the story of the settling of this area along the Watauga River. Staged in the reconstructed Fort Watauga, this is a fun way to learn about history.

Not a large park but does have fort structures and hosts a variety of events from re-enactments to pow-wows to celtic festivals. But when not hosting an event, it doesn't stand out much from other parks. Does have a beautiful beside the Watauga River.

The rangers usually have something planned for the weekends. The Celtic and Native American festivals (May and August) are best, and the outdoor historical play in July should be seen at least once.
