“Filthy bathroom, dirty sofa bed, and broken things”
Reviewed January 4, 2012

. We came in late and were assigned to a room . When we pulled out the sofa bed, which was supposed to have sheets on it, there was a dirty sock and trash and not sheets. We asked to switch rooms. In the new room the phone did not work. The hair dryer did not work either and the fridge had a busted shelf. The worst thing was the bathroom filth. I am including photos. The walls in the bathroom had red stains above the toilet paper holder. There were yellow pooled stains and hair on the porcelain base on both sides of the toilet. The corners of the bathroom floor had grunge with hair and dirt matted in it. The bathroom walls had yellow splatters on them. The top of the shower surround had so much obvious black dirt that when I wiped it with a dry wash cloth it turned both sides of the cloth black. The safety bar in the shower was filthy with solid black on one side. The blanket had cigarette burns in it. It seemed like house keeping must only change the sheets and wipe it down with no real cleaning. This place needed major scrubbing with sanitizing cleanser. I do not care about mismatched decor or outdated furnishings. One star hotels have that, but unhealthy filth is another thing.
We did not ask for our money back because I did not want them to think I was complaining just to get a refund. But no refund was offered when we shared our experience upon checking out. I do not care about things like out dated furniture but it must be clean. That is basic. Super 8 is not our top choice because the quality differs so greatly from one property to another. (However the previous night we stayed in another Super 8 in Pigeon Forge that was run immaculately.) I am sorry to be negative, but this place needs elbow grease and a new standard of cleanliness. It would not take much and it could be up to an acceptable standard for a one star hotel.

Room Tip: I would ask to see the room first before signing in.

1. Room smelled from too much humidity and it couldn't be removed during overnight stay. It was damp in there. 2. Upon entering bathroom for 1st time there was urine on the floor in front of toilet. 3. Previous guests placed used bath towels behind bathroom door and they were there when we entered the unit. 4. Per the desk clerk "Because there was an accident on I-24 the owner gave the desk clerk instructions to NOT honor the booklet coupon" found in "Travel Coupons". (traffic was backed up we checked in at 7:16 p.m.) 5. No in-room coffee pot.

We stayed at this Super 8 on July 23, 2011 and July 30, 2011. We were travelling with our in-laws, and the reservation for both rooms was in our name. When checking out on July 24, our in-laws said their room had been dirty, with hair in the shower and mold in the tub. Both rooms smelled like stale smoke, although they were advertised as non-smoking rooms. The clerk gave us a refund of $5 for the lack of cleanliness.

On July 30, we checked in around 8:00 PM after driving for 12 hours. After going to dinner, we came back to find two employees outside the door of our in-laws’ room saying that the smoke detector was going off. They told our in-laws that they needed to leave their door open, and that should help the smoke detector stop due to the humidity. After leaving their door open for a while, the smoke detector did stop beeping.

At 11:50 PM, our in-laws called us because their smoke detector was going off again. The hotel could not fix it. They told our in-laws that all of the rooms were rented, and the only option was for them to check out. When our in-laws asked about a refund, the manager asked if they had used the shower - as if that would be a condition on whether they could have a refund or not. Although both rooms were under the same reservation and paid for together, and although we were all travelling together and from out of state, the manager did not want to refund the money for our room since it was usable. We had to persistently tell them that we would not be staying in our room while our in-laws slept in the car or on our floor. The manager’s voice was very loud and rude. They finally agreed to refund the money for both rooms, and then stood in the doorway with new sheets while we tried to pack all of our things and get out of the room. They basically gave us 5 - 10 minutes to get out of the room. They did not offer to help find us a room somewhere else in town, or even at another Super 8 somewhere close. They only told us that there was a baseball tournament in town, and we would have to drive at least two hours before we could find any availability.

I wanted to make sure that everyone knows about the lack of customer service at this particular Super 8. I understand that I shouldn’t expect luxury at this price, but under the circumstances, I would expect a refund of our money without having to make our point for fifteen minutes. All we wanted was a clean place to sleep for a few hours before hitting the road again, and this Super 8 not only didn’t provide a clean room for us to sleep, but had a complete lack of customer service as well.

When I look for a hotel for my family, I'm looking for value but the most important thing to me is cleanliness. This hotel is the filthiest I've ever stayed at. The toilet had goo on it, the walls and doors were filthy. The front door was not aligned so we had to slam it in order for it to close. The furniture was old, stained and worn out. From the phone to the remote control.... dirty. Look elsewehere if cleanliness is a factor.

For the price, this is a great place. There's nothing fancy. I was a little concerned about being close to the 24 but you can't hear it. There's a bit you can hear from hwy 76 but not from the room we stayed (#214 or maybe it was #216), either way it's the second closest to hwy 76. Our room could have benefited from some touch ups, e.g. the front door a little banged up, lamp shade had some dings, etc. but the place was clean. My wife is OCD about cleanliness & no complaints from her. The comp. breakfast is nothing fancy but this Super 8 is walking distance to Waffle House & across the street from McDonald's. The heater works great & wow, the hot water gets very hot fast which is nice since the weather can get cold. The staff is a husband wife team & they're very hospitable.
