Stayed at the Read House last week. Overall it was an outstanding experience.
Pros:
*great price for location.
*staff and service exceptional. We were with a group, and everyone from the banquet staff to the front desk to the valets to waiters to housekeeping bent over backward to promptly meet our every need with a great attitude every time.
*room was one of the CLEANEST I have ever seen. Every time i check into a hotel, I always take a disinfecting wipe and go over the phone, doorknob, and toilet seat. I almost always notice how it could be cleaner. NOT SO at the Read House. Very clean.
*agree with other posters about the great comfy beds. We had a suite w/ kids on the sofa pullout and even THEY were comfortable!
*convenience- shuttle, and places to eat both in the hotel and nearby.
* nostalgia- great effort to preserve the history of this old place. Lobby and common areas are beautiful. The ballrooms are enchanting and elegant. The lounge/bar is kind of art deco and cozy. The rooms (ours was in the original bldg.) were redone with an effort to retain some of that charm.
* we arrived early (about 12:45) and called on our way @ 12:30 to ask if they were willing to keep our luggage until we checked in (we were going about town, and didn't want to leave it in hot car). They said our room was not ready (it WAS early), and they'd be happy to do that, but, by the time we got there, it was ready. We checked in at 12:45 and our room was perfect.
Cons:
(not many)
*bathroom is indeed tiny-nowhere to set down "stuff". Also, no electrical outlet (at least in our room-corner king suite). The nearest outlet to the bathroom kept turning plugs loose. I use hair appliances, and had to go over to the coffee set up area (is mirrored), so that was kind of annoying. But as I said, so clean and plenty of water pressure.
*spa tub by pool. This is a big spa, but it did not work while we were there.
4days and 3 nights, and it was never addressed. The jets did not work and the water was cold, and, as another poster said, full of small kids...though that blame falls on their parents. Hopefully it is repaired by now.
*parking $$-was $11 although we were in a group ang got it for $9. Yes, this seems like a ripoff, but seems in line with other hotels in cities we have seen. You CAN choose to park yourself in nearby lots for about $3-5 a day.

**Be sure you ask for a room in the orginal bldg as the new ones are more "ordinary".
* We did not hear any construction work.
*We did have 2 windows, but there wasn't much of a view. They didn't sell us a view, though. What can you do, pick up the building and move it??? It is 5 blocks from the river with bldgs in the way. But it was quiet.
* would definitely stay here again.

This is a beautifully restored hotel in a convenient downtown location. We stayed two nights. At check-in I requested an upgrade to "club" level. I was politely informed I would be using some of my Starwood Preferred Guest points and I agreed. The club level offered three differences: 1) no ice machine so we had to go down two levels; 2) a continental breakfast avail only on Sunday; and 3) the suite turned out to be one room with a sweet sleeper bed (to die for!) and a loveseat.

On the positive side, the staff were attentive and pleasant.

We stayed at the read house In July on a weekend. It was a beautiful hotel and a it really had a lot of character since it was an old remodled building. they were still remodeling parts of the lobby. It was a gorgeos place to stay with an old 1920 feel. I love antiques so it was a perfect place. Beware though that they only have valet parking and it is 11 dollars a day. They did not inform us of this ahead of time. They also had given away the room we reserved by the time we got there even though we had a guarantee for late arrival. We did end up with a nicer room however but it did take a long time to check in and there were many people working on this for us. We were told that the room they had left had a broken TV. They eventually foudn us a wonderful room. Then at check out, we were charged wrong for our parking and were sent back inside. All in all we loved the hotel but the service should be bumped up a notch.

I booked this hotel on Priceline for $71, and believe me...it was worth the price. The best part of the hotel is definitely the location. There is a shuttle stop right across the street that runs from the Choo Choo to the Aquarium - and it is free! It does stop running around 8:00 PM, so beware. Like the previous reviewer said, you can walk pretty much anywhere, but it is definitely more accessible with the shuttle! They were still doing construction in the lobby, but the rest of the hotel was very nice. The indoor pool was great - and the rooms were very clean. There is a Starbucks and a steakhouse within the hotel, which were both very handy. The staff was very friendly. If it doesn't say anywhere, the valet parking was $11.00 per night. They do have public parking all around though if you would prefer to go that route. All in all a very delightful experience.

As a side note - another great restaurant - (located in Jack's Alley - a stop on the shuttle) is Sticky Fingers. The ribs there are to die for!

The location is great, walking distance to the aquarium, in the renovated downtown area. The hotel itself is well maintained and decorated. Enjoyed the historic ambiance, especially in the lobby. All areas were very clean and overall we were very comfortable. The sweet sleeper bed is fantastic, and there were about 6 very comfortable pillows on each bed (we had 2 queens). Our bathroom was very small, but in a historic property that was not surprising. There were a few times we had to ask staff to straighten out a glitch, and they did so with good humor. I would return here, and recommend it.
