“Really Unique”
Reviewed September 10, 2013

I thought that this was going to be an ordinary hotel, but little did I know it was a really unique hotel. You are actually in a train station. Its really cool. We didn't stay in the train cars, but we did walk by them and they were actually really nice. Each car made two rooms. The hotel room we stayed in was in the 3rd complex and happened to be right next door to the venue of the concert we were attending at Track 29. The hotel offers all kinds of amenities, there is a gift shop, store, coffee shop, bar, restaurant and pool and its all walking distance from any of the rooms. Its 100 years old so it definitely has and old, antique style but it was a great experience and if we go back to Chattanooga we will be staying there.

Room Tip: If you are looking to go to Track 29 the 3rd building is the closest.

The Chattanooga ChooChoo is a great place to have a Reunion. Everything was great. The Rooms were nice and very clean, and Our Banquet was the best. The Food quality is excellent.
This would be a great place to get away for a while, everything is very convenient.

Room Tip: We stayed in Building 1 and everything was good. I also saw one of the Rail Car rooms and it was ver...

The Chattanooga Choo Choo isn't just a hotel... it's a historic site as well!

It kind of stands out in the middle of Chattanooga, TN, as it looks like a huge train station, sort of like Grand Central Station (in NYC) to an extent. Even the lobby, when you first walk in for check-in, is a massive corridor with extremely tall ceilings and train references all over the place.

The Choo Choo has 2 types of rooms - rooms in the hotel buildings and rooms on train cars. For our 2 nights there, we had a room on one of the train cars. We expected our son, a big train fan, to get a big kick out of sleeping on a train (we had done so at the Red Caboose Motel in Lancaster, PA, but this was more grandiose), and he most certainly did! The room was comfy and not cramped at all. There was a King sized bed and a twin sized fold-out couch bed as well. Even the bathroom wasn't really cramped, and I am a big guy myself. The AC kept the cold air in and the hot air out. Outlets were sort of at a premium (for charging phones and such), but we made do.

The hotel also serves as a "campus" with a number of restaurants, shops, and activities to explore, all in walking distance. We checked out the Model Railroad Museum, the Station House, the Silver Diner, the Sweet Stop ice cream parlor, the Gardens restaurant, the Depot Gift Shop, and the trolley ride! All of the above were worth checking out. I will submit separate reviews for each one that has a Trip Advisor, but I can't find a few, so here are some highlights:

The Model Railroad Museum - we were able to get through the museum in about 20-30 minutes. It is a HUGE, ornate model railroad recreation of Chattanooga! Very details and somewhat interactive! They have a scavenger hunt list and a number of buttons you can press that activate movement on the model. For the smaller boys and girls, there a handful of step-up platforms that they can climb to get a better view, as the model railroad is probably 4-5 feet up from the ground. You can tell a lot of work was put into it and it's worth a viewing if you have some train (or model train) fans in your group.

The Silver Diner - this is a diner on a silver train coach! I believe all they serve is pizza, but the pizza her is above-average from what you'll find outside of NYC (where we're from). Our son tried the pizza in the Station House and wouldn't eat it. This, though, he gobbled right up! It was actually pretty good. Again, the menu is limited, but don't stop yourself from trying the pizza, as it's fairly good. It was kind of neat to eat on the coach car, and the diner itself has a sort of 50s retro feel to it. Very cool. The staff was friendly, as well.

The Sweet Stop ice cream parlor - On a hot, humid night, this place came in VERY handy! It's a retro ice cream parlor that serves hand-scooped Blue Bunny ice cream and TONS of candy! They had a decent selection of flavors and were reasonably priced. The candy selection was large and a lot of self-restraint was exercised that night. :)

The Depot Gift Shop - for all of your Chattanooga Choo Choo gift-giving needs, the Depot is a little shop on the campus that has everything from tshirts to engineer caps to toy trains to postcards to... you name it! There was a large selection and the prices weren't any more absurd than any other place you can go to.

One of the coolest features on the Choo Choo campus is the 1924 New Orleans trolley ride! You have to buy tickets beforehand (I think it was $5 total for 2 adults and 1 5-year old), and you get a slow, relaxing ride - with guided tour - on an old school trolley. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable, and very patient with our rambunctious son. You're told all about the area you're on and the trolley itself and things you pass on the ride. Maybe a 20-minute ride, or so. Very nice as long as the weather is on your side.

One of the most beautiful aspects of the Choo Choo is its gardens. The grounds are very nice to just walk around. By the train car rooms and restaruants, there are a number of fountains, statues, and garden areas that provide a very peaceful atmosphere to just relax and walk (or sit) in.

For our 2-night stay, we bought their "Childrens' Fantasy" package, which comes with tickets to the local zoo, aquarium, Discovery Center Museum, and a $25 Choo Choo gift certificate to use in any of the campus restaurants. It was a little pricey, but it was out "big" vacation of the year, so I don't regret it and wouldn't have done it any differently.

The location of the Choo Choo is close to everything. In fact, since our trip, we have been telling everyone how great Chattanooga is. We had 4 days packed with solid things to do that entertained both of us as well as our son. Not once did we have to drive more than 13 minutes to get somewhere. It was a great city and we will be coming back eventually.

Room Tip: You're going to pay more for the train car rooms, but they are well-designed and comfortable, an...

We went to the lobby to find a map and decided to stay. Beautiful old restored depot. We stayed on the end in hotel #1. I guess they have several buildings along with old cars. You can sleep on a car if you choose but it looked like you only get half a car. There was a beautiful courtyard between our room and the lobby/depot with fountains and roses. At night they have gas fire torches lit. Very pretty. We went to the model train museum and spent quite a bit of time looking over the huge display. It's was fun picking through and noticing all the details. I locked how they made smoke with darkened batting or cotton. Ate in the garden and had a good supper.

Double queen room was nice sized. We could have added a couple of sleeping bags at the end of the beds but would have caused a little difficulty going to bathroom in the middle of the night. But it would have worked. We like larger rooms that allow for space for extra grandkids to sleep on the floor. We were pooped from a day of sight seeing and just wanted a comfortable room to rest and this fit the bill for a total of around $160.

We will probably come back again and bring our grandsons. They would both love the trains. Steam engine 29 is fun to see and climb on for kids and train lovers. Wifi worked fine. Rooms were dated but very clean and comfortable. Not so small where you feel cramped.

Overall it was a very nice experience.

We will have breakfast this morning in the Garden again

We loved our stay at the Chatanooga ChooChoo! You've got to look at the map of the facility because everything you would ever need or want is on the premises! It was so neat to see the history and the old trains and station! The kids were thoroughly entertained! The Station House Restarant was beautiful and had live entertainment. The Garden Restaurant had a delicious buffet where kids 10 and under eat free! The Silver Dollar Pizza car is another option. The Cafe Expresso and Victorian Lounge were very nice. Very cute little shops and trolley car rides. If you want to head to the Chattanooga Aquarium we took the shuttle there and back from the ChooChoo. :) There were pools too, but we ran out of time. Definitely will stay at the Chattanooga Choo Choo again!

I went with a tour group. Was pleasantly surprised at the quality of our hotel. This is not just a place to sleep, it's a history lesson. The hotel is spread out, but they have carts to carry you to your designated building.( You pass sleeper cars on your way ) the rooms were clean and ours opened onto the pool with a very nice sitting area. The shops, railroad museum, even a tour of those sleeper cars is worth spending some time going through. The restaurant was exceptional! We had a breakfast buffet that was one of the best of our trip. I'd recommend the hotel on its breakfast alone, but the whole place has a charm of its own. When you step into the lobby, you've stepped back to a time when artisans created rooms of beauty from floor to ceiling!

Room Tip: The spa was in the building next to the one I stayed in. Our room was pool side which had its own v...

We had a WONDERFUL TIME for our 25th Anniversary. The Station House Restaurant is beyond belief, not only the food but the entertainment. The downside was the appearance of the run down property across the street from the Choo Choo at Check In. The properties across the street from the entrance made us wonder if we really wanted to stay there. After talking with the people at the Welcome Center and looking at the property of the Choo Choo Hotel, we realized we would love it there. We were so happy that we chose to stay and our package deal was beyond belief. The people were fantastic, friendly, and there is so much to do in the area. Would absolutely go back again and stay at the Choo Choo Hotel. The Shuttle is free and took us all over the town.

Room Tip: The best part of our trip was our dinner in the Station House, where the waiters and waitresses sang...

Congratulations! I am so glad that you had a wonderful time celebrating your 25th anniversary. It is great to know that you enjoyed your room and the Station House restaurant. As I have mentioned before, the Southside of downtown (our area) has undergone a revitalization with restaurants (3), retail and housing ($300,000+ condo’s) in the last couple of years. The 2 properties across the street have been purchased and are going to be developed soon.
Come back for another weekend getaway.
