Chattanooga Choo Choo
Ranked #39 of 96 Hotels in Chattanooga
Reviewed June 25, 2012

When were we there: June 2012

Who are we: Part of a tourist part from Great Rail Holidays in the UK. Age group about 65

Where is the Chattanooga Choo Choo Hotel: about 3-4 miles out of the City

Transport links: there is a free electric shuttle bus very close (100 yards) from the hotel entrance which runs a frequent service downtown (such as downtown is), but terminates at the Tourist Information Centre.

Hotel description: not a particularly pretty hotel being an ex railway station from years gone by. Rather a small'ish sprawling complex of buildings and railway coaches (which you can book to sleep in). Some small nice gardens. Gift shops. Old railway Engine (on Track 29!!). Look for the door above the reception area, which in the old days was where a man would stand and shout the train departures. Not many people know this!

The rooms: typically American with two double beds, slightly dowdy but with a decent sized bathroom. Abit faded splendour generally sums up the hotel. Trading on being what it was in the past. Very acceptable and generally quite clean. No room safe. Coffee facilities.

Good security with respect to entry into the hotel buildings

Breakfast: a very decent restaurant available for food, but cereals or somethings abit cheaper, go to the cafe alongside the main restaurant. Quite small but OK. Cafe also will make up a decent sandwich

There is a bar with a most entertaining and witty barman who has been there many years. A really nice guy. He will also tell you about the hotel and it's past .

Parking: adequate and quite safe

Staff: very nice and friendly

Swimming: look like a nice pool in Building Complex Number 1.

The area around the hotel: nothing there really. No small Ma and Pa for breakfast.

Chattanooga: quite a lovely city. Go down to the riverfront. Seems a safe place.
Tourist Information well worth a visit. Much to learn and nice staff. Good map of City on the wall.

Would I stay again? Yes. Good transport links (as above) to city. Check hours of operation.

Room Tip: Ground floor rooms seem pretty safe as there is a decent bolt on the large sliding doors. Best not t...

Rooms were great, so was the service. The location was the best, close to the free electric buses that took you around the city. The ride to the riverfront was nice, lots to do and see.

We stayed here for a whole week. No complaints at all. Room was very clean, food at the restaurants was good and priced accordingly. We were here with the National T Bucket Alliance, national event. The hotel staff bent over backwards to help us all. Teresa at the Lacey Lady gift shop was fantastic with directions and was very helpful.

THANK YOU Choo Choo!!!!!

This hotel has a really fancy main building, the old station is gorgeous, the victorian bar is charming and you should really go see it, if you're in Chattanooga. Just don't stay in the regular rooms! When you check in, you get directed to an ugly, rundown concrete block waaay down behind the hotel. The rooms are quite bare and not very charming, and it's a long walk up to the hotel!

We were tired and thirsty when we got there, but the vending machine on our floor was out of order, one of the elevators was broken, so it took a while to get hold of a few bottles of water. (and our room door wouldn't close properly, so we had to use the dead bolt)

On the good side, the pool was good, and there are 3. On the bad side, they charged us 34 dollars for a 2 person breakfast! (You must choose the buffet and you pay for EACH drink you get (a glass of juice or a mug of coffee). I was just left with the feeling, that they try to squeeze as many dollars and dimes out of the concept and the beautiful lobby, ut as a guest you really don't get your moneys worth.

Room Tip: get one of the train carts - it can only be better

It is disappointing to hear of your comments. We have just painted the exterior of one of our buildings and plan on continuing with the rest of the hotel buildings. I don’t understand your comments about the rooms being bare. They are furnished per brand standard requirements. I am sorry that you weren’t happy with your accommodations. Our complex is spread out but we have 24 hour golf cart rides to and from any location on our property. We did have a problem with the elevators and I apologize. Unfortunately, we can’t always anticipate when things of that nature happen. We got it up and running as soon as we could. I am glad that you enjoyed the pools. We hope that while visiting Chattanooga again that you will give us another chance. I feel assured that your return visit will be different.

I read the reviews before we booked so I had an idea of what to expect. sadly all the things others said were true. The rooms are Ok. If you tend to get cold in the night ask for extra blankets..the ones they give you are paper thin. The water pressure is almost painful in the shower..usually I am complaining about not enough..this is a first. My 12 year old had to take a bath because it was so painful and when I put my face under the shower I knew why. The guestoom buildings need a total overhaul. The pool in our building 2 is in need of a total refacing and it was dirty with lots of debri floating around.

So having said all that the lobby and grounds are gorgeous. The gardens are exceptionally manicured and all the trains and memorabilia are so cool. It is very close to everything and the free, electric transit system picks you up right next to the building and brings you downtown and to the aquarium. The two restaurants next door, The terminal and Blue Orleans were awesome.

We did not get a chance to eat at any of the restaurants at the hotel so I cannot speak to them.

Overall it was worth what we paid, not a penny more. I would maybe stay here again to try out the train car rooms but otherwise would not.

Thanks for your great comments about the lobby and grounds Building 2 , where you stayed, was just renovated to brand standards ($ 700,000) with new wall treatment, carpeting and bedding upgrades. In addition the corridors were done also from top to bottom. The pools get cleaned several times daily, I will check that out. I would be happy to speak with you about your visit. I will email you via tripadvisor.

This hotel is at the end of the free bus line making getting around downtown easy. The hotel is very cool and historic, but do want to charge for all the little extras which seems cheep considerig the price. The room was great and hotel 3 we had a great balcony. Overall a great location and we will be back.

We wanted to do something original and it definetely was something. We spend a night in one of the train wagons and this is interesting. The wagon are huges inside and you have a lot of space but everything is a bit outdated. So, I think it is a funny thing to do with kids that are interested in trains for a night, but I would not spend more time there. Moreover I think the price is a bit too high compared to the value and it is located a bit outside of what you would call the city center of Chattanooga, e.g. it takes you 15 minutes by bus to go to the aquarium.
