“Good but not great”
Reviewed November 20, 2007

We stayed here as part of an organised tour with Travelsphere. So we didn't get to choose our hotels. But , for interest,I did look at Tripadvisor before we went. The reviews are very mixed and I can see why. The rooms were big, very comfortable and very clean. But the site itself is a bit odd. The whole thing felt a bit deserted when we went and a little run down in parts. We went on the site trolley car which was free to guests and a good job too! The driver was clearly not that interested and the darn thing kept breaking down! We had breakfast in The Gardens on site and it was pretty good but didn't eat there at night having read the reviews on this site. We went downtown on the free shuttle and ate there instead. Some of our group ate at The Station House on site and had very mixed experiences apparently...with some loving it and some hating it! Overall it was fine...we were only there two nights but I think I would stay somewhere more central if I came back. The city itself is ok....I wouldn't have wanted to stay for longer than the 2 days we were there....we spent a day on Lookout Mountain....Ruby Falls were good, Rocky City and the Incline Railway were ok. The Art District downtown was quite nice altho we didn;t have time to go into the galleries which was a shame. Some of the group went to the aquarium and said it was very good.

Booked this hotel due to it's historic nature and we ended up in building 2. The elevator barely worked (it broke down while we were there) and the room was typical -- pretty much what you'd expect from a standard star Holiday Inn/Best Western/etc type place. The trains, garden, restaurants and shops are nice but this place is pretty much geared towards kids and families. Location is good as it's a short drive to Lookout Mountain and even shorter to downtown where there are some good eats and nightlife. If I could do it all over again I probably would have booked one of the victorian train cars as those look really cool. I'd go as far to say the day that I do have children we would definitely stay here as they'd get a kick out of all the train stuff, etc.

We stayed at the Choo Choo on Sept 28, 2007. I think it is worth $40 a night max to stay there. There are a few good things about this hotel. There is lots of free parking and it is located right next to the free shuttle to downtown and close to the freeway. The lobby is nice and the gardens are very pretty. The old trains are interesting to look at.

Now for the negatives. We booked our room through Hotwire and the clerk checking us in only reluctantly gave us a room with a king size bed, and initially wanted to charge us the difference in price between the Hotwire rate and the normal rate to have a king bed room instead of two doubles. We were in Hotel building # 3 which appears to have been built in the 1960s or 70s and not remodeled since the 80s. The hallway carpets were dirty, the wallpaper in the halls was peeling away a little, and the elevator buttons are all cracked. The bathroom is very dated. I would compare the quality of the room to that of a worn out Super 8 motel. The pool looked nice but we did not use it or eat in any of the restaurants.

The Hotel has an old-timey feel to it. There are trains everywhere to the delight of my 3 young boys. The hotel rooms, while clean need to be renovated badly.

From a budget perspcetive,we chose the Family package which included tickets for 4 to the Zoo, Rock City, The Acquarium and the theater and that saved us a ton of money.

Plus the kids ate free for breaksfast, lunch and dinner each night.
So if this vacation is strictly for the kids, then I suggest it.

If you're looking for a more luxurious vacation this hotel is not for you.
I gave it an above average because we saved so much money.

I've stayed at a $50 hotel nicer than this one!!! The main building is beautiful, but thats how they fool you. Thats not the hotel it's just a lobby. We stayed in building 1it smelled like mold and the hall ways are very hot. The phone in our room didn't work so we had to call the front desk for everything and they kept transferring us to the wrong ext. so we would have to keep calling back from our personal cell phone. The only nice thing was the in door pool. We paid $160 for the room, $25 for a pizza and coke which my 6 year old said taste nasty, and housekeeping stoled my $50 swim suite. Very poor keeping of the hotel!!! Wouldn't recommend to anyone very disappointed!!! Not worth the money we paid at all!!!
