“A Great Bed and Breakfast Experience in a Historic Setting!”
Reviewed May 15, 2013

The total experience was great from beginning to the end. My wife and I spent two days at the Mayor's Mansion Inn. The staff and owners were always available to assist in any of our needs. They made us feel like family while we were on premise. The meals and presentations were superb. We particularly enjoyed the common areas of the Mansion such as the sitting room. It was a fun experience and we look forward to going again real soon. We have stayed in at least five different Bed and Breakfast Inns and the Mayor's Mansion Inn was the best by far.

We stayed here on two occassions, loved both! See it at Christmas, extravagently decorated. Great food, attentive staff. Pick 2nd or 3rd floor, more elaborate rooms. Very elegant, had a 2nd floor room w/ 300 gall tub that fit both easily. HUGE bathroom, canopy bed with yards of fabric hanging. A real WOW factor. Great front porch for people watching, close to University so lots of folks walkingeverywhere. Very nice neighborhood with all old style mansions lining it.

Room Tip: 2nd or 3rd floor, roomier and more elgant.

Was our first experience at a Bed and Breakfast. We could not have asked for anything more.
The staff was great. Had some awesome meals. Our room was beautifully decorated and most of all clean. The nice clean smell of your sheets and towels.

This is a wonderful place to stay. Very friendly you almost think you are having breakfast with family very relaxed.

Room Tip: Any room would be great.

I frequently stay in historic register properties and the Mayor's Mansion is certainly one of the best maintained and best run Inns I've ever stayed in. The house is a beautiful structure with period decorations and is in perfect condition yet still feels entirely original. The location is also convenient to the university and many of the downtown attractions.

First the good - a gorgeous old building beautifully restored with magnificent furnishings. Now the bad - the place is entirely staffed by college students who are exceedingly nice and want to help, but are pretty much clueless.

Tried to check in at 2:30pm. Was told by a young maid that the inn keepers don't arrive until 4:00pm. Came back at 5:00pm and had to cool our heels in the library while the inn keepers (2 college kids) gave tours to 3 couples who had arrived ahead of us. Having heard the tour twice, we opted to go to our room when we finally got to check in.

The breakfast was cheddar cheese waffles and fried chicken which was just a vile as it sounds. We got a tiny fruit parfait at the beginning (excellent) and a lemon mouse (very good) after, but the main course was inedible. I told the waiter that I wanted orange juice instead of coffee. He brought a 3 ounce glass. I asked for one refill, then gave up. Worst breakfast I have ever had in a B&B. No cereal, breads or muffins offered - just greasy fried chicken for breakfast.

To top off the experience, after we had booked the room and agreed that there were no refunds, a 5% service fee was added. I assume this is the B&B equivalent of the resort fee rip-off that some hotels use. I just saw it as a bait and switch.

MC Ladd H, Owner at Mayor's Mansion Inn, responded to this review, April 28, 2013
As the owners of this property, we rarely take offense to a review, as we feel it communicates someone’s opinion which reflects their specific tastes or the comments can help us improve our business. However, we question this reviewer’s intentions. Having started off their experience with not being allowed to check in early, likely set their tone. Check-out is at 11:00am, check-in is at 4:00pm. We have only 5 hours to get the Inn completely “guest ready” and most days it takes that long. Any organization you do business with has policies stated. If you read the policies and still do business, you shouldn’t complain about the policy.

Being accused of a “bait and switch” practice questions our integrity, as well as being unfair and unwarranted. The check-in time for our Inn and the 5% service charge are both stated on our website under “Accommodations” BEFORE you get to the room descriptions. It is not in fine print lost at the bottom of a page. The reservation for this guest was made on-line so he HAD to confirm he had read our policies as shown on the reservation system again, which, specifically included these two items BEFORE the system would complete the process. Finally, the confirmation which he received had our check-in time listed 3 times and it had the 5% service charge noted twice. A guest may choose not to read the website OR the reservation system OR the confirmation email they received with all this information on it, but don’t label it as “bait and switch” just because you choose not to read the policies.

Regarding food, these folks were offered a tour they said they had heard twice while they waited to be checked in, obviously they don’t listen any better than they read or they would have heard that they could have the breakfast shown or we could fix them something else—all they had to do was tell us. We HAVE cereals, breads, muffins, etc. and can prepare eggs and omelets and other traditional breakfast fare. We are glad to fix our guest a breakfast they will enjoy. At present, chicken and waffles (the ones that everyone else coming through has enjoyed) is showing up on restaurant menus and on magazine covers and we like to have fun with current trends in southern cuisine here at the Inn. We have gotten great reviews from guests who have tried this item.

Finally, our “college kids” are all experienced Innkeepers, two are grad students, one is about graduate, three of our full-timers “came with the building” 5 years ago. They know our business and they treat our guests as well as we, the owners, would. We value our guests and do all we can do to make their stay exceed expectations. This guest’s venomous response was not intended as constructive criticism, but, to attempt to do harm to our excellent reputation.

We had a girls get-away weekend and, after checking hotels and other B&B's in Chattanooga, we made reservations at Mayor's Mansion. It was wonderful and the staff could not have been any nicer or more attentive. The inn is absolutely beautiful with a nice front porch for happy hour. The owner actually came out and introduced himself to us and talked for a while - very nice! Since there were 3 of us, they advised they could bring in a roll away bed to our room. When we walked in our room, the roll away bed was there and already set up. The staff was the greatest and the food was excellent. Would definitely recommend staying at Mayor's Mansion. You'll be glad you did!!!!

My wife and I had our wedding reception at Mayor's Mansion on April 6, 2013, and we spent the night there. Everything went perfectly! It could not have gone better. The staff was exceptional, the planning had nailed everything, the music system quality was just right, the food was fantastic and beautifully displayed, even the wine was great. Spending the night there was very relaxing after a long, hectic day, and it was wonderful to wake up in that environment and have a quality lite breakfast with your loved one in that setting. I would recommend this B&B 100 times out of 100 -- they're that good.
