A real "out in the sticks" experience only 15 minutes from the city center. Wind up Elder Mountain Road and turn left to the TVA stored pump facility which pumps water from the river at the foot of the mountain up to the mountain top at night and then releases it to generate electricity during peak load times. When the mountain top lake is full, it's a beautiful drive or bike ride (miles of trails to ride on) with picnic areas and a beautiful overlook over the Tennessee River Gorge, the office of which houses the history of the Racoon Mountain Dam and Lake as well as how it generates electricity. Racoons abound, hence the name Racoon Mountain. Also visable are the raptors (eagles, hawks and turkey buzzards) along with abundant wild life like deer and squirrels. A pleasent ride and visit.
