Description: It starts with the freshest local ingredients from nearby farms, transformed by Chef Shelly D. Cooper into dishes that are both familiar and brand new. This isn't the high Southern cooking you might see in movies like The Help. This isn't low country cooking. It's inspired by the local fare eaten in the Southern Appalachians for centuries, a cuisine born from a deep love of the land. From steaks to scallops, from chowchow to country ham, from barbecue duck to biscuits, from hills and hollers to the coast, TerraMae's menus are firmly rooted in regional traditions with a contemporary twist. Some of our ingredients are unexpected to those who have forgotten or never experienced the practical magic of Appalachian foodways. Whether you come for dinner, lunch, or brunch, you're sure to rediscover the delight of truly local food. TerraMae is a perfect location for large groups and private dining experiences.

Terra Mae did a prix fixe dinner on New Year's eve that was fantastic. It really showed off Chef Shelly's chops and included an entree of bison ribeye wrapped in pork belly. Whether you stay at the Stone Fort Inn or are in town elsewhere, this place needs to be on your dinner rotation!

Having been here before and had a wonderful meal, I decided to visit again while back in Chattanooga. Without a doubt, this place has not disappointed me in the slightest. Chef Cooper and her staff are to be congratulated.

I ordered different items from travel birds. The only item that I could find fault with was the cauliflower soup with crab meat - kind of bland and boring. On the other hand the salad was excellent - interesting things like watermelon radish and some great bacon and black eyed peas. The crispy pork belly was unbelievable and the crab and lobster risotto with the scallops was outstanding. Atmosphere is very warm. Overall great meal.

We got suggestions from several locals and ended up choosing Terra mae. It was a lovely venue and the service was excellent! However, nearly everything came up short. The "lunchables" appetizer platter held great promise, but was a huge disappointment. The sweet potato biscuits had a very barely discernable flavor of sweet potatoes, were dry and pretty hard and all were overcooked to the point of one being burned. The carmelized sesame seed bacon reminded one of beef jerky and the country ham looked more like proscuitto but with little or no taste. On a more positive note, the pickled shrimp and bleu pimento cheese were excellent. The flounder preparation, while sounding very tasty, was bland. Our filet was of excellent quality and cooked to a perfect medium/medium rare temperature. Prices seemed to be in line for an upper scale restaurant, if only the end product had been more pleasant. The chef seems to be in earnest but misguided as to what constitutes a "fine dining experience." Hopefully, things can be fine tuned for future experiences.

Thank you very much for your feedback. We are happy to hear that you were
happy with your filet, pickled shrimp, and bleu pimento cheese. The later
two are some of Chef Shelley’s specialties. We are sorry to hear that the
Appalachian Lunchable was disappointing. The Benne Seed bacon is often a
favorite that receives rave reviews, and we are surprised that it didn’t hit
the mark. We will definitely take your experience into consideration as we
continue to grow and improve in the coming year. We hope you will join us
again in 2014 and give our menu another try. As it changes seasonally, there
might be some new items more to your liking and new ingredients coming in
from the TerraMae farm that you will find as delicious as the items you
enjoyed best.

For the most part, the atmosphere is very delightful and romantic (I can excuse the disturbing taxidermy because the rest of the décor is welcoming). The menu and food selection was delicious and varied. Location was very accommodating and is within walking distance from almost all downtown hotels. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive as well. Food was priced a little higher than we had anticipated from recommendations, but delicious and unique.
