Description: It starts with the freshest local ingredients from nearby farms, transformed by Chef Shelly D. Cooper into dishes that are both familiar and brand new. This isn't the high Southern cooking you might see in movies like The Help. This isn't low country cooking. It's inspired by the local fare eaten in the Southern Appalachians for centuries, a cuisine born from a deep love of the land. From steaks to scallops, from chowchow to country ham, from barbecue duck to biscuits, from hills and hollers to the coast, TerraMae's menus are firmly rooted in regional traditions with a contemporary twist. Some of our ingredients are unexpected to those who have forgotten or never experienced the practical magic of Appalachian foodways. Whether you come for dinner, lunch, or brunch, you're sure to rediscover the delight of truly local food. TerraMae is a perfect location for large groups and private dining experiences.

We were in Chattanooga for July 4th celebration. Our hosts chose TerraMae Bistro for lunch the next day. It is located in a restored downtown hotel. The menu is unusual, healthy, and supports local farmers. We had the Lacquered Chicken Salad that consisted of the dark meat over a bed of mixed greens with apricots, almonds, olives, capers, and goat cheese, a delicious combination. My husband selected the Lamb Rueben that he said was outstanding. The only down side was the coffee had to be brewed and came after our selections were served. It is hard to find a restaurant with a unique selection. Try it and I think you will agree.

Returning home for a family visit is always a fun time to explore new places in Chattanooga. I read reviews of TerraMae and knew the old building in the downtown would appeal to me and it didn't disappoint. The food used fresh local produce and the option of the lovely fruit instead of fries was super. We had the buffalo burger (that has some heat!) and a lamb Reuben. Both were excellent. Service was friendly and great. A beautiful quiet spot in the heart of town.

This was our second visit to Terra Mae. The food and service were great. We shared the butternut squash soup to start. I had the bison short rib as my entree, complemented with delicious red potato chucks and au gratined, and a wonderful cold 'slaw' made with thinly sliced squash and zucchini, plus some lettuce and finished with a vinaigrette dressing. They list this dish as a medium plate, but it's plenty of food! The ala carte vegetable sides ALL sounded great, so I had to try the red beets finished with blue cheese and walnuts. Wonderful!! My wife had the roasted halibut served over some sautéed vegetables rather than the angel hair pasta, and she was delighted with it. Our server, Eric was very helpful when we were ordering and with wine recommendations. All in all, One of the top restaurants in the downtown area! Keep it up, Terra Mae!

We stayed in the Stone Fort Inn attached to the restaurant. The restaurant is really excellent and quite unusual. If we are back in Chattanooga we will be back here, though we will stay somewhere else.

This was our second visit to TerraMae. The first time I remember the service was very slow, but they were busy that night and the food was great so we gave the place another try.
We had dinner on a Thursday night and the restaurant had several tables occupied but I would not say busy by any means. We waited over 5 minutes to be greeted, once the server greeted us and took our drink orders we waited another 10 minutes for the drinks. The server came back a couple of minutes later and asked if we were ready to order and we had to ask him if there were any specials for the day. He told us about the soup and we ordered. I started with the house salad with hydroponic greens, berries and butter pecan dressing and my husband had the butternut squash soup. Both were beyond delicious. My husband then ordered the crispy shell point oysters that he thought would come on the shell, but they didn't. They were fried, which was not what he expected. Good, but didn't fit the description on the menu. I had the peach BBQ Bison Short Ribs and the husband finished with the Crispy Pork Belly and poached egg. Both of the dishes were good and didn't disappoint but nothing to rave about. When the food came out we needed our water refilled, but had to flag down the server to get refills. Once we finished the meal we waited another 10 minutes for the server to take our dishes while he hung out by the kitchen. We were never once asked if we wanted another glass of wine.
Overall, the food us above average but the lack of service is disappointing, especially for the prices you are paying for the food. There are many other fantastic restaurants in Chattanooga to try.

We are glad to hear that your returned to TerraMae after a pleasant first visit, and that you enjoyed your soup, salad, and BBQ Bison Short Ribs. We are sorry, however, that the service did not meet your expectations. To clarify about the Crispy Shell Point Oysters, we no longer serve them on the half-shell after comments that this made them too salty. This is a very recent change and is not yet reflected on the menu. The server should have clarified this for you, as well as made it more clear that crispy meant fried. We will definitely take your experience into consideration when we update our menu. We agree that the level of service was not up to our high standards, and apologize that this affected your evening. We have discussed this with our staff and are taking measures to ensure each and every table has attentive service from the hostess stand through handling the check. We hope you will join us again in the future to see these changes in action and enjoy some more of Chef Shelley’s delicious menu items.
