Owner description: Did you know The designation of DUKW is not a military pun - the name comes from the terminology used for military vehicles in World War II; the D indicates a vehicle designed in 1942, the U meant "utility (amphibious)", the K indicated all-wheel drive and the W indicated two powered rear axles. Although technically a misnomer, DUKWs are often referred to as duck boats. Another popular nickname was old magoo or simply magoo. Though the origin of this term is unknown, it probably refers to the odd shape of the vehicle. DUKWs became known as ''Ducks'' and are still in use, as well as purpose-built amphibious tour buses, primarily as tourist transport in harbor and river cities.

Fun trip with our 9 year old grandson. We adventured through the city to the river and into the water. Nice and different view of the beautiful restored downtown Chattanooga. Each child was given the chance to drive which was a nice touch. We were fortunate it was a beautiful early Fall day and this was a nice adventure even for the over 60 grandparents. Steve did a good job showing us the way even with microphone problems.

We liked learning about the history of the bluffs and the river. Glad my girls tried it, they were scared before we went.

Chattanooga Ducks was located close to our hotel (5 min walk) so we decided to take the tour. Turned out to be one of the more memorable parts of our visit to Chattanooga. The tour lasts about an hour +. The guide was very informative about the vehicle, the city and the river. Our nine year old daughter got to drive the Duck (in the water, not on the streets) and her day was made!

Yes, what a great time you will have here!! Grandpa and my two grandkids had a couple of hours to kill in downtown Chattanooga yesterday and decided to take the tour on one of the amphibious "ducks...A bit odd looking at first but when it was explained that these vehicles were from the 1942 era and were built for our government to bring supplies to shore after a beach invasion in WWII, they actually looked pretty cool. They drove us through the streets of downtown Chattanooga and ended up on a steep ramp pointing down toward the Tennessee River...then the driver said...HERE WE GO...and go we did...SPLASH...once in the water we got a wonderful tour of the riverfront area and yes, all of the kids got a chance to steer the craft...WOW...IT WAS FUN FOR ALL

Included in our group was a 63, a 57, a 43 and a 4 year old and every one of us really enjoyed this trip. I was totally unaware of the fact that our military had used such a vehicle which has a combination of a land / water use. Our guide was filled to the brim with charm and personality in fact he did the tour so well that I felt as if he had a vested interest in the success of each trip. Maybe he was the owner?? Anyhow he was very knowledgeable about the history of the land as well as the river in Chattanooga. Children were given a chance to drive the boat and they all loved it!!!!! He even went so far as to recommend places to dine, this was especially appreciated since I have been stuck more than once haven picked the wrong place to eat.
