“Good for a lunch, but a bit of a tourist trap!”
Reviewed October 1, 2013

We stopped at this café in downtown Wall (which is really just one street!) before we drove through the Badlands National Park. Can't miss it as freeway signs advertise it for miles on the road. Noisy and crowded, the food in not really that great. After seeing 50+ signs for it on the road, we felt we had to see it! A number of shops in the café building and along the Wall main street. I had the bison burger, and definitely do not recommend it! Good donuts.

"Wall Drug" is like a small mall/Walmart. The cafe is in the back. The menu prices listed were very low (5 cent coffee), but the entire building (cafe included) was dingy, crowded, noisy and tacky. It didn't take us long to decide not to eat there. I tend to believe you get what you pay for...and a 5 cent cup of coffee probably TASTES like a 5 cent cup of coffee...

“Trust me...DON'T get the sliced roast beef sandwich!”
Reviewed October 1, 2013 via mobile

Okay, I get it...Wall Drug is a fun quirky tourist trap in the middle of nowhere. If you are in the area, it is definitely worth the stop, but I wouldn't pick the sliced roast beef sandwich ever again!
Let me explain:
My wife and I and our son were driving along the interstate in South Dakota and seeing intriguinging signs every mile for the last 100 miles or so, we had to stop and check it out. We were all hungry and the promises of homemade pie sealed the deal. When we were within two blocks of the place, nearly all parking was full and we noticed a few tour buses parked as well. That omen proved correct, as we entered the cafe and the two foodlines (one for the quick sandwiches/salads and desserts--and one for the cook-to-order) were very, very long. We decided to go to the "quick" line and all 3 of us got the sliced roast beef sandwich; my son and I got a piece of pie each (apple and cherry). The person at the counter sliced the roast beef as we watched.
We all agreed--the roast beef sandwiches were the worst we ever have had--my wife didn't want to finish hers...the meat was extremely dry, tough, bland and, well...tasteless. As if that wasn't disappointment enough, the "homemade" pie certainly did not taste homemade. The pie filling was canned and the crust was very thick, bottom and top, with a distinctly "commercial" appearance. My wife and I regretted our choice; the cook-to-order line (different menu) was probably the better choice, but we will never know.
Go for the tourist trap experience...not for the food, at least not the cold sliced roast beef sandwich!

Thank you for your feedback. We appreciate hearing first hand experiences from our customers. We apologize for the dry and tough roast beef sandwich. We recently changed our recipe of the roast beef to make it more juicy and tender. We are constantly trying to improve, and its reviews like this that we are thankful for. We would also like to apologize for your disappointment in our homemade pie. Although it does look commercial, we can assure you that it is homemade. We invite you to try Wall Drug out again, the Legendary Hot Beef Sandwich is….well….Legendary.

Best regards,

“bad coffee, bad ice water, OK pie, really good bison and donuts, though”
Reviewed September 28, 2013

The coffee was over-priced at $.05, and the ice water didn't taste very good at all. The apple and cherry pie had lots of cornstarch and was too sweet. The bison burger was great, though, as were the donuts. As a retail operation, it has to be seen - big room after big room of stuff - absolutely mind-boggling.

The place is set up to make you want to buy, but there's no pressure to do so. If you use it as a place to stop and stretch your legs and decompress from the road and/or the incredible badlands, it's a great place.

Lots of hype, but it provides a very valuable service.
