I stayed three nights at this hotel. I liked everything about it, but especially the restaurant. It feels almost like a conservatory with its south-facing windows providing a wonderful view of Castle Crag and Grange Fell. And happily the food and service were every bit as superlative as the view.

After a number of poor performance years following the sale by the once long time owners, Mr & Mrs Parkinson, Borrowdale Gates is now back on form. Some renovation work on the property has taken place to tremendous benefit. One of the best hotel locations in the Lake District adds to its appeal with excellent ambience.

Superb dinner menu; I cannot recall ever having fillet steak so tender and prepared to perfection. Good service by helpful and efficient staff wit the proprietor on hand. However, the grave-yard of hotel dining rooms, namely breakfast could have been better. Haddock lukewarm at best and poached eggs over-cooked. Bread (toast) prepared from a factory product was less than appealing although croissants were good and fresh. Self-service starters were plentiful and enjoyable.

At £72 for a well-appointed and spacious double room with single occupancy was up to £50 cheaper than other near-by hotels of my acquaintance. I will certainly be returning after many years absence due to mediocre proprietors. This certainly no longer applies. Bravo, Borrowdale Gates.

We have just had a fabulous 3 night db+b break and although described as a "dog friendly" hotel, our labrador was only allowed in the room which stopped us spending time in the bar on an evening unfortunately. That's by the by.
On arrival we were greeted warmly and shown to our dog friendly room which had beautiful views to the fells above Derwent water, after unpacking we went to the bar before dinner where we could sit and peruse over the very creative menu, the food was absoloutely delicious!..appetisers, starters, mains and dessert all washed down with a very reasonably priced bottle of red..the curry and sultana bread has to be the best I've ever tasted!..every dish is prepared with the freshest ingredients and the views to accompany the meals are simply stunning.
Service excellent...restaurant attention to detail excellent!
The room was spotlessly clean with loads of hot water to bathe aching limbs in every day, it was the perfect place to unwind completely away from the rigours of every day life. .thoroughly recommended and will certainly be back!

Jack pot! My husband and I have visited this area for many years- alone and then with our children. We recently decided to take my mother in law for her 80th Birthday who has never visited the Lake District and how delighted we were to have chosen the Borrowdale Gates Hotel. The hotel was absolutely delightful, totally professional and probably one of the cleanest and well kept places I have visited-what a gem! The chef must also be commended for the excellent breakfasts and evening meals. The atmosphere was relaxed, warm and homely.Thank you for making a potentially difficult weekend very memorable. My husband and I look forward to returning alone!

Another perfect stay at the Borrowdale Gates Hotel, big thank you to all the staff and to the chef who catered for my special diet with such ease. We enjoyed our stay so much that we have booked two return visits. I can highly recommend this hotel.

These were all the things we needed from our fourth stay at the Borrowdale Gates Hotel. Each was there in abundance. From the moment we arrived everything fell smoothly into place, including the superb 5 course dinners. The fourth different room we've had was as good if not better than the last. Excellent, polite staff even shared a laugh with us in the restaurant which you don't always feel you can do with hotels of this standing and quality. They are knowledgeable about everything in the local area including walks and which bits are currently under water and impassable. We simply can't wait until we can be there again.
An amazing array of birds visit the well stocked feeders and the squirrel comes for the nuts, put out fresh every day, when nobody is looking. Green finch, goldfinch, siskin, all the tits, chaffinch, robin, and the pigeon hoovers the bits dropped onto the floor. It used to be a pheasant but we didn't see that one this year. Having now read how to write a good review the bit we didn't like was having to come away!
