“Shade valley has its up and down points.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 13, 2011

7 nights in a 6 person cabin for bike week, be careful with the so called 6 person cabin as they are very small, I would suggest a 6 person Cabin for 4 people would be better. The showers and toilet blocks were very clean, they also offer on site laundry for a small charge. The site has two bars but neither sell liquor, bottled beer only and glasses of wine. There was live music everynight in the eye candy saloon but the party atmosphere never really got going. There is a small food menu that changed daily and the food was good, but be warned this place was covered with flys! all of the staff were friendly and helpful and the small general store on site was well stocked with most items you need including crates of beer. If you are looking to soak up bike week atmosphere this is not the place. Full throttle saloon is a 15 min bus journey but main street is another 5 minutes on a different bus.
Overall Shade Valley is ok, if you want to visit sturgis bike week but keep away from the party atmosphere this is the location.

Hello! The 6 person cabins are small, dry camping cabins and can actually sleep 8. They are one room cabins that have 2 full and 4 single size beds. The cabins also have air conditioning and small deck. We are very glad that you liked our shower houses, laundry, food and store. We plan to get some different bands in the Eye Candy this year so stay tuned! If you have some great band suggestions- we’re all ears! Thanks for staying with us and we hope you come back! Thanks, Shade Valley

The campground is very nice. We have a toy hauler and we camped without hook-ups, self contained. We had plenty of shade and we were able to camp near our friends who were in tents.
The lodge type bar is a little large. I think they need to get more/better entertainment if they want to get more people in there. Also, it needs to stay open a little later for those of us that take DaBus into town at night and aren't ready to call it a night when we return.
The shower house was always clean and never crowded. They also have plenty of outlets and mirrors.
The food was a bit over prices but it didn't taste too bad.
The water filling station and dump station for the RV's was large and easily accessible.
The campground is a few miles outside of town so you have to fight through the Buffalo Chip traffic sometimes but the ride out there once you pass the Chip is beautiful.
The staff is friendly and helpful as well.

The Facility
•The shower houses were very nice. They contained flushing toilets. The toilets distributed around the campground however, were port-a-potties.

•The lake they mention is a man made water pool dug near the front entrance with some kind of white/gray fabric along the shore. No one ever went near it. The parking lot near the front entrance by the lodge was always muddy. This could be related to the "lake" maintenance.

•Picnic tables were first come first serve. The camper had to go find one and bring it back to their site. None were available when we got there.

Our Campsite
•The trees looked like there had been a few bad storms. Shade wasn't as plentiful as expected. Our particular campsite Fatboy Drive# 312 did not have any shade.

•We had an electrical hookup, but later in the stay our neighbors said that when we turned our three fans on, their electricity didn't work. Management did check the electrical hookups, but they made no comments to us as to why or what the problem was.

Over all
It was a nice place. The description was a little exaggerated. Campers don’t have any control over where they can camp which is understandable for electrical hook ups. However, there are generally storms and we like some protection from trees. Trees are not available to everyone.

This site is open just for the Rally. It has loads of clean showers and well constructed buildings. Shade Valley is staffed by friendly, happy people who want you to enjoy your stay.
Offering a bar and a saloon with nightly bands, as well as having it's own store you could live on site for the week. The meals are well priced and filling, but Sturgis is not the ideal place for veggies.
The camping sites are flat and shaded, and the soil is easy to hammer pegs into. We had one storm during our stay.
Da Bus runs hourly from here, driven by Adrian. This is an absolute boon, as you get to party into town. It'll take you about half an hour to get to town, but it is fun all the way.
Remember it is bike week, so go with an open mind and a tolerance for loud bikes and people, as well as some nudity and spontaneous behaviour.
In the whole time we were in Sturgis we never had a scary or intimidating moment. These are good people.

  • Liked — It was perfect for our needs
  • Disliked — It could have been closer to town
