There was a lot more to read about and see than I expected--there are three floors of exhibits to go through. The various displays cover a wide range of topics that easily appeal to military history buffs. This isn't really a centerpiece of a trip to the Black Hills but if you have a few hours available while passing through it's interesting enough.

We came for the museum, but I was struck by the appearance of the old Ft. Meade. This is the kind of military post I was used to when I entered the Army. Now military posts are an agglomeration of mismatched architectural styles in a meandering landscape. I realize the new posts are more functional in the modern military, but places like Ft. Meade exemplify order and discipline.
Anyway, the museum was partly makeshift n appearance, but the bulk of it is a well-organized and comprehensive interpretation of military life at the post. The displays are well done, informative, and varied.
The entry fee was nominal, and I'm glad we made the stop.

This is a great little museum next to the VA hospital in Sturgis. Awesome information on the last cavalry of the United States. Very informational and the staff is very knowledgeable! Highly recommend!

If you want to learn anything about the history of the area, this is a must see! They have very neat artifacts that tell an amazing story of The Fort as well as the history of the Sturgis Area. The staff are always friendly and very knowledgeable. And it's a great price to get in.

This museum was very interesting and worth taking an hour or so to see. Lots of history both good and bad is shown. There was a large contingent of buffalo soldiers stationed here. The and the only survivor ( a horse) of Custer's battle of the Little Big Horn lived out the rest of his live here. The cost was only $5.00. Parking was immediately in front of the building and we had the place to ourselves!
