“great choice”
Reviewed June 20, 2013

picking this hotel was a great choice it is located within driving distance off all the major attractions the area has to offer. It is also very close to the city center which is well worth a visit.the hotel is very well run and the staff are friendly and helpfull, we were on the 4th floor and our room was excellent, great bed ,clean and had a great view of the blackhills. The bar has a great selection of drinks and the barman was like our travel guide he know all the best places to visit. The food in the resturant was great and plenty of it.On my next visit to Rapid city this will be my hotel.

Room Tip: food in the restaurent is great but it gets very busy at the weekend be prepared to wait

We had a reservation to stay in this hotel on a Wednesday night the end of May 2013. We arrived early (1:30 pm) and we were told the room was not yet ready, but should be available by 2:30 pm. No problem as most hotels check in times are a bit later. We went to the mall for awhile. We came back a little after 3 pm and they checked us in. We had booked online and asked for the "drink coupon" that was included in our reservation. We were told that they haven't given away drink coupons for over a year. The website still shows rates with these coupons. Anyway, we carried in all of our luggage and found that our room had not yet been cleaned-door wide open, pillows on the floor, beds unmade, etc. We went back up to the front desk and stated that our room was not clean. The man that we spoke to said "what do you mean your room is not clean?" He was a total jerk. We explained what we found and asked if we could check in to a different room. We were told that he had no idea when any room would be ready because they were busy the night before and he didn't know how to get ahold of the cleaning people. WHAT? I saw cleaning people in the hallway just around the corner from the front desk. Remember this was on a Wednesday. The man we spoke to was very rude and stated that we should just "check out" then. We asked to speak with a manager. He stated he was the manager. At this point we were quite upset. Why would they check us in to a dirty room? Wouldn't they have known that NONE of the rooms were clean? We would not have minded waiting if they would have been honest with us. It was just frustrating since we unloaded the entire car before we knew they had NO clean rooms. There were hardly any cars in the parking lot by the way. We said fine and asked for a confirmation that we would not be charged for the room. The man walked away to talk to someone else and stated "we are done here". We did not want to leave until receiving a confirmation that we would not be charged for the room. He completely spaced us off for quite a while. We finally went across the street to the Ramada (an older property). The managers there were wonderfully accommodating and we had an awesome FREE hot buffett breakfast. Kids loved it there with the rooms surrounding the indoor pool. Don't ever stay at the Grand Gateway. Rude, rude, rude!!!

I have been a guest at the Grand Gateway Hotel in Rapid City several times and have foiund the hotel staff to be couteous, professional and friendly. The Sales Department was always on top of our group and the Catering Department always worked hard to please our groups. Marlow, Jon and Corey were the best as was the housekeeping staff and maintance staff. I am sorry that our group no longer visits Rapid City so I can no longer enjoy the benefits and hospitality of this hotel.

This hotel offered us a very clean, spacious room at a reasonable price. My new husband and I stayed at the Grand Gateway Hotel on our post-wedding roadtrip across the country. We had driven all day and had gone out to watch the night lighting of Mt. Rushmore so we were VERY tired when we arrived. Literally we were just looking for a place to lay our heads, but it was more than that. We had a very large king size bed, fresh towels, a refrigerator and microwave in our room and the room smelled and appeared very clean. This hotel gave us great access to I-90 and there is a lounge and a Perkins in/attached to the hotel, both were wonderful in terms of service and price. The hotel seemed newly updated to reflect a victorian or vintage feel but with all new furnishings. It was wonderful. Thanks!

Room Tip: we stayed on the 3rd floor but there was easy elevator access!

When you enter the hotel it smells like a dirty bar. They have a bar off of the main entrance with a fan at the doorway in a poor attempt to blow the dirty air back into the bar. Not so great if you have a child with asthma.
After checking in we found that the room we had reserved with two queen sized beds actually had two full sized beds. The beds were smaller than the queen sized headboards attached to the walls. The beds themselves are terrible! We have been home for two days and our backs still ache from the beds we slept on- it felt like sleeping on a blow up mattress or bounce house floor.
The ceilings are the old popcorn ceilings which concerned me as they typically are made with asbestos.
Also, the pool area appeared to be clean but upon entering the pool I could see the dirty bottom of the pool and areas of the pool floor feel like you are walking on wet toilet paper where the sealer is bubbled up.

I guess if you don't come to this hotel with high standards you would think it is great, however I have stayed in much nicer hotels for the same price and expected better from this establishment.

Room Tip: Don't stay here, there are better options in the area.

This is a pretty good hotel located in a really great area full of restaurants and shopping. Service was a little slow checking in but nothing horrible. The hotel overall seems a bit dated mostly done in dark wood and brown carpets, however it was very clean. If you have kids it has quite a nice indoor pool and big water slide that they would probably love. The wi-fi did work well. Overall I would stay here again, but they do need to consider refreshing.
