Best Western Ramkota Hotel
Ranked #23 of 48 Hotels in Rapid City
Reviewed May 10, 2011

This is an older property with worn carpets, chipped tub enamel, peeling wallpaper, and the like -- about what one expects with older hotels. When I wanted to use the public hot tub, the pump was broken and the tub was closed. When I ordered a beer off the restaurant menu, they were out. When I changed orders as the waitress suggested, they were out of that one, too. Oh, yeah, they don't know about sound insulation between rroms either, but I always carry custom earplugs. Finally, there is no elevator to the second floor where the coin laundry is located, so how does the disabled traveler wash his/her clothing.

Room Tip: The Holiday Inn Express is across the street.

Thank you so much for your comments; hearing directly from our guests is the best way to measure our success and areas with opportunities for growth. We continue to invest a great deal of time, effort and money in our annual maintenance and regret you found your room so disappointing. Your comments will be shared with our staff and with the General Manager of Minervas Restaurant.

On behalf of our staff, I would hope that you would give us another opportunity when you are back in the Black Hills.

Respectfully,

My husband and I travel quite often but usually haven't chosen Best Western motels. We decided to try this last weekend and was traveling with one of our kids and three grandkids. Our stay was very disappointing. This was the first time we decided to stay at a Best Western in a very long time. Upon entering our room, it was too hot. In checking the heater, it would not turn off or down with the control set correctly. Our daughter's room heater did not work at all, as only cold air came out regardless of which setting was chosen. We chose to unplug the unit in our room, but it was finally repaired by maintenance. Our daughter's room heater was never repaired, even though maintenance came several times. The maintenance man we met Saturday morning stated that the person performing the repair had changed the AC unit instead of the heat unit. The front desk offered her one portable heater and did provide extra blankets. She had to continue to make calls to find out when and how the problem would be resolved. Front desk staff was very rude in addressing her concerns and seemed to care less whether or not they resolved the issue for her. The coffee pot water well in our room needs cleaned, as well as the carpet and soiled blanket (I spot cleaned the blanket myself before we used it).. Our daughter's room carpet was also dirty. She requested to be moved to another roo and front desk staff stated the motel was full - THEY WERE NOT FULL. There were many empty rooms. The pool and water park area was opened almost 30 minutes late on one day and front desk staff was rude when questioned about it. As far as the water park and pool area, the floors should be kept mopped up more frequently to help prevent falls. However, the beds, towels and pillows are great, but we wonder how often the bed spread and pillows are laundered. There are far too many other great motels to stay in the area that are clean, friendly, offer a more competitive price and a continental breakfast. Minerva's is nice and great food - but too expensive for what is offered.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience - first and foremost I apologize.

We recently won the Directors Award from Best Western for the cleanliness and upkeep of our guest rooms and building. I am very sorry we did not live up to either one of our standards, and believe me it's not the norm.

Your comments will be shared with our staff and corrective action steps will be taken. There is no room at our facility for rude/poor customer service.

We do appreciate your business and hope we have the opportunity to earn your loyalty in the future.

Respectfully,

Linens/carpets updated, Clean and comfortable. Very nice outside courtyard. Great pool for younger kids. My son is 10 and had a blast on the water slides (Those are some fast slides!) The rest of the pool is perfect for small kids.

The hotel has a big waterpark, first and foremost. So if you're sensitive to chlorine, this might not be the best place for you. The wedding we attended had it's reception here (which was nice because we were also staying here). They made the reception hall look nice, although that could've been the bridal party's handy work. The room was alright, walls seemed thin. When I turned the heater on, a very strange burning smell entered the room. I called the front desk and that didn't seem to worry them. I just kept the heat off the rest of the trip... I didn't want to potentially burn the place down!

I might stay here again, as we have a lot of family in SD, but the unfriendlyness of the staff is quite a turn-off.

This hotel seems great for families with young kids, but as a twentysomething couple, we did not appreciate the smell of chlorine from the waterpark, the sound of kids running up and down the hallways, or the loud ice machine that woke us up at 6am. The hallways look really outdated, and the rooms are only slightly better. We did like that they were spacious. This is a large hotel with a large parking lot, but we could never get a spot close to the entrance of our portion of the hotel. The location is great because it is close to the highway (easy access) and close to a lot of different places to eat. I wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone that didn't have kids.

Honestly, I bet it was 1/4 mile from my room to the lobby and restaurant! I was there 5 nights for a conference. Fortunately most of the meetings were in my zipcode in the hotel, but when I had to go to the OTHER end, it was faster to drive. The hotel had 3 floors, but they must have kept adding and adding on. I had a suite and it was very nice, but the kitchen could have used a few utensils and dishes. The bathroom was nice-sized, but they sqeezed the toilet into a small corner right up against the sink, so you need to watch your elbows. The maid service was slow. I was getting sick and wanted to take a nap at 3 p.m. one day and my room still wasn't made up. I asked the maid for a couple towels and another bar of soap and let it go that day. There is a small "casino" in the bar, which allows smoking and you must walk past this open door to get to the lobby and meeting rooms and restuarant in the front of the hotel, very unpleasant for non-smokers. You must also walk past the pool and the tile floor in the hallway was often wet--watch your step! The restauarant was ok, but pricey for the town. No elevators. Meeting room facilities were average. Easy on-off freeway.

Thank you so much for your comments; hearing directly from our guests is the best way to measure our success and areas with opportunity for growth,

I am very sorry we did not live up to either one of our expectations and standards, your comments will be shared with the housekeeping staff so that others will not have the same experience. Also, thank you for the idea of utensils in our suites. We will be discussing that at an upcoming meeting to see if that is a good option for us.

In reference to our building size, we are a very big building and as we grew with demand building higher than 2 floors wasn’t an option. We completely agree with you that it can be quite a walk depending on where you are located.

As for the casino, we are hoping with the No-Smoking Bill that is up for vote in November the Oak Leaf Lounge will be non-smoking as the Minerva’s Restaurant and Bar had done already.

We do appreciate your business and hope we have the opportunity to earn you loyalty in the future.

Sincerely,
Kathy McCoy

LOVED this hotel! We had always stayed in a cabin when we traveled to the Black Hills...this hotel was every bit as much fun as a cabin! There is an amazing waterpark with slides, sprinklers, and spray guns for kids of all ages, as well as a regular pool and hot tub in a separate area. Our room was on the first floor with sliding glass doors that led out to a courtyard where the kids could run around and play as well! Will definitely stay there again!
