We stayed one night here and if you love the quaint, "mom and pop" type inns, this is a great place. It was clean, made you feel at home, and you could tell the owners were very proud of the establishment. There were a few camper hookups. It is beyond the downtown area and on the way to Mt. Rushmore and area attractions. The parking was plentiful. I bet this is an older place where lots of guests return year after year. The beds were comfortable and our room had everything we needed including a microwave and refrigerator. We stayed in a room that had a connecting room. People came in later and took the room that connected and you could hear them talking. Luckily, we were all quiet people. Our room seemed to lack space to put suitcases with all the other things in it but you can park just outside your room. There were a few quirky things like an older shower with the head a bit low and a temperamental faucet in the sink. Breakfast was good but at the peak time, it was crowded with not enough sitting space. Some people were not even eating, just sitting and reading the newspaper. If you want to be away from it all, yet just a short ride to downtown, this is a good place.

Room Tip: Try to get a room that is not connected to another. We did not see a place to eat within walking di...

The owners were so accommodating! I called to let them know we would be arriving late. The front office closed at 10, but he told us he would just tape the key to the office door for us. We arrived slightly after 10, and the man was just locking up, but he came out and greeted us and showed us where our room was. The room was nice - it's refreshing sometimes to get away from the chain hotels! In the morning, after breakfast in a bed&breakfast fashion, we walked around the back (front?) of the hotel, and... WOW! What a view! It doesn't seem like you're on a hill until you realize you can see all of Rapid City in the plain below!! And there's a hot tub back there... Wish we had had more time here!
The owner was very helpful and knowledgeable about the area. He gave us a tip about a scenic drive back to I90 after we visited Mt. Rushmore - and, boy, was he right on the money! Thank you - the drive was gorgeous!

The lodge had a great view for the sun rise and of the city lights at night. My wife and I sat out there for hour or so just taking it in and talking. The room was neat, clean and comfortable. Wonderful value, We shall return.... :-)

Room Tip: Get a room with the view, it is worth it.

Stayed three nights so we could see all the sights around Black Hills area. Great views from the room as the motel is up high overlooking Rapid City. sunrise very impressive. Staff very friendly and helpful with suggestions re attractions and restaurants. Laundry facilities which were very welcome. Room was very clean, bathroom is very small in fact washbasin out in main room. Ask for hairdryer at reception as not in room. Breakfast was fine but always the same so can get a bit boring after a few days!

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing east - for the views

This is our second stay at this ridgetop motel, after discovering it about a year ago. I was amazed that a place this pleasant and clean, in such a scenic and convenient, yet quiet location, with many of the modern amenities could be had at this price. Bring your cell phone, as there are no land lines in the rooms; BUT the room is always immaculately clean, and does include TV, micro, fridge with freezer, and a tub shower/toilet room w separate vanity area. Add to that a ledge top deck with panoramic view across 60 plus miles to the Badlands on the east horizon and a picnic area with gas grill & hot tub. They provide a decent breakfast spread including protein. There is a guest computer and wi-fi; staff are exceptionally friendly and helpful; and the location affords quick and easy access to the Black Hills, or to downtown in under ten minutes. We are not the least bit tempted to stay any where else in town.

Room Tip: The west side is quieter when the weather is good, as the deck is on the east side. Rooms on the ea...

No, Hospitality House is not the official name of this property but could be an appropriate sub
title. My work has me in about 150 hotel nights a year. Mostly chain. On our personal travel, I
try to find unique owner operated lodging. Big Sky fits. Being just a bit out of the city was perfect.
The views have been commented on but be sure to take advantage of the western air to view
the starlight sky. Our accomodation had enough room for comfort. Breakfast is more than
adequate and is watched carefully so that it is always well supplied. Five nights here and we
saw just about all the attractions of importance.

Jay and Alicia are part of the non-chain experience. We enjoyed talking about the varied past
travels of both parties. As others have stated, J & A gave fine guidence for our time in the Hills.
One advisement was to travel through Spearfish Canyon. It was great. When going to Mount
Rushmore, I recommend stopping first at the Borglum/Rushmore Museum in Keystone. Adds
a lot to your enjoyment and knowledge of the "Faces." The carving at the Crazy Horse Monument
is coming along well. Impressive and hopefully thought provoking re the love of the Lakota
Souix for "Their Hills."

Colonial House is enjoyable dining and only five minutes away from Big Sky. Hill City is a nice
spot. The Alpine Inn is wonderful for German food. Take note of the days and hours.
The Railroad Museum in Hill City is worthwhile and especially if you enjoy HO operating
layouts. While on that note, the Air and Space displays at Ellsworth AFB are worth a trip.

My husband and I recently stayed in this hotel on our belated (10 year) honeymoon. We were on our way from Michigan to Wyoming and had not planned or booked ahead as we wanted it to be fun, stress free and spontaneous. At hour 17 of 18 hours on the road, we were about an hour out of Rapid City so we visited tripadvisor for reviews of hotels and restaurants. It was 8:00 pm and we didn't expect to find a good room much less a great one. We joked about how there was no way a decent hotel could be found for under a $100. Maybe only no tell motels. The reviews led us here and we were blown away that such a nice, clean room was such a great deal. The staff were very helpful and friendly, especially considering we rolled in after 10pm. Breakfast was great and atmosphere was laid back and super friendly. We are planning to stay again if they are still around in a few more years when our kids are old enough to appreciate mt Rushmore and other local history and wonders. Easy to get to from I 90 and only about 20 minutes from Mt Rushmore and the park.
