“Great Price for decent hotel stay”
Reviewed September 29, 2012

What we liked most of all was the reasonable price.
2nd best thing was that it was relatively quiet. Even though we had a room facing the interstate.
the windows were new and the traffic noise was low. We also heard next to nothing from other parts of the hotel. quiet is a rare commodity even in much fancier hotels.
We had originally booked at the HI Express and cancelled because of the noise complaints posted on TA, plus the ABVI was $50 a night cheaper

the room was ok. the bed comfy and we appreciated having a fridge microwave in the room.
Flat screen tv with good selection of channels.

The breakfast was ok. There were two hot choices. make your own hot waffles and the sausage gravy with biscuits. the rest was standard fair: fruit, cereal, juice, coffee.

Now for the not so likeables.
There was no closet per say, just a rickety upright freestanding wardrobe.
The decor on one of the walls was a little odd, Purplish colored painted stucco. (1980's style) We had a first floor room overlooking the front parking and interstate. the windows had basic window locks on them and there were cars parked 6 feet away. granted it would involve crawling through the hedges but still discomforting. plus there was no safe in the room. But there was no mention of any crime issues from other reviews, so we let it go
the sink was immediately aside the entry door when you enter the room. it is also directly outside the bathroom door and the door swung out which meant any one standing at the sink had to get out of the way for another to get into the bathroom. Most hotels have a bathroom door that swings in.

Room Tip: Neighborhood and directional stuff: Mt Rushmore is 30 minutes via Hwy 16 The airport is 20-30 min...

Dear atlbeme,

I really appreciate your taking the time to review our hotel. Your kind words not only help us keep costs down, but they are a real benefit for fellow travelers to Rapid City and the Black Hills. Probably the number one comment we see is about the noise (or lack there of). I assume that is because most people see the highway so close and figure it's going to be noisy, but the building is all concrete and brick and was really built right.

It's funny you should mention the decor. There are only a couple of rooms with that (or similar) paint. When we took over this hotel back in December, the first thing my wife said to me was 'we need to paint and re-carpet those three rooms'. Well, now that the busy season is over, that's one of the first things on the to-do list. We'll also be looking at replacing some of the older dressers and armoires. I hadn't considered the swing of the bathroom door before. Thanks for the comment, and I'll look into that too.

As for security: we have safe deposit boxes located at the front desk available for no additional charge (someone should have mentioned that at check-in - I'll have talk with the front desk staff about that). For some reason people like to be able to lock the windows open a little bit, hence the adjustable thumb screw locks. And finally, we have 24 hour security patrols. So rest assured, security is a priority for us too.

Thanks again for your comments, and may all your travels be safe and happy!

Everything was great about this hotel. Beautiful modern room (flat screen television, comfortable leather reading chair, stylish lavatory, q tips, cotton bolls, fast internet connection), extensive breakfast (variety of cereals, hot food, juices, pastries, two attendants, plenty of tables at which to eat), clean and well kept facility (room, lobby, parking lot, dinning room, hall ways, ice machine), and great price. Employees were very friendly and very responsive to our needs. I highly recommend it and will return when in the area.

We've stayed at other America's Best Value Inns and they could not hold a candle to this one. Yes, it's a value hotel, but the room was very clean, the breakfast had a ton of choices and the staff were all very friendly. The front desk person even offered to carry our bags! We stayed on the second floor and used both the stairs and the elevator, both in convenient locations. The Internet worked well as did the TV. Didn't try the pool, but the spa was cozy. We would definitely stay here again.

Have never stayed with this chain before, won't ever again. I find it hard to believe the other reviews that called this place "awesome" we're written by real guests. At check in, the staff was not pleasant, and in fact seemed annoyed that we booked through a third party site. We did not see our room until later that evening, after a trip to Mt. Rushmore. Let's just say I was instantly on the Internet looking for a new hotel. We could not get a refund from the third party, so decided to ask the front desk for another room...on the 2nd floor. Now, this time she was fairly pleasant, and although quite flustered by our request, did move us to another room...which was a little nicer. We also felt safer up there, as the window in our first room did not lock. Also, as a side note, we saw a couple going to thier room with two dogs, so dogs are permitted In the first floor rooms....great for someone with allergies! And is it a coincidence that the carpet in the 2nd floor room was cleaner? At any rate, it was a cheap place to stay, but next time, we'll pay a little more to get more, and definitely check out the next hotel before booking!

Dear hwaas4,

Yes, all of our TripAdvisor reviews are written by our guests. As you can see by our reviews your unpleasant experience was an exception and not the norm. None the less, I am terribly sorry for your poor experience at our hotel. We strive to make every guest stay as pleasant as possible and take our reputation very seriously. I have taken your comments to heart and will use them as a teaching tool at our next staff meeting.

Unfortunately when you book through a third party our hands are tied when it comes to reservation changes or cancellations. Using third party websites are great for shopping and comparing, but you should always be able to get a better rate when booking directly with the property. Upon request, any reputable hotel will always let you see your room before you check in and allow you to make changes or requests to make sure your stay is the best it can be. This is only a suggestion and it is not meant to explain or excuse the attitude that you received from our desk clerk. I hope you will accept my personal and sincere apology. I have already taken action to ensure that this does not happen again.

Also, if you suffer from pet allergies, I recommend that you check with the hotel directly to see if they are a pet friendly property. If you do choose to stay with a hotel that accepts pets talk to them before you book your stay. Many places, like our hotel, only allow pets in certain rooms and have certain rooms that never allow pets.

Again I am truly sorry your stay with us wasn't nearly as pleasant as it should have been. I also hope that my recommendations will help make your future travels the best they can be.

Wherever life may take you, I hope your journey is a safe and happy one.

We stayed at this hotel for the last several years while attending the annual Dakota Polka Festival each September. The rooms are very clean. We enjoyed the breakfast every morning. There was a variety of food choices. We enjoyed having breakfast every morning with our friends in the spacious dining area. The Staff was very friendly and helpful with our travelling questions. The hotel was not far from one of the shopping malls we went to and also is within walking distance of a few restaurants.

We arrived in Rapid City late evening (10.30 pm) and it was a short drive to this hotel. The rooms were very good, spacious, clean, eqipped with a fridge and plenty of towels etc. The breakfast room was adjacent to the reception and was clean and tidy. The breakfast was very sufficient, good selection of cereals, cakes and buns, fresh bread, juice, waffles, eggs, yoghurt, fresh fruit and tea and coffee, all of which was replaced very quickly with new supplies. The staff at the hotel were extremely helpful and friendly. The pool area was clean and tidy, although we didn't have time for a swim! There was a BBQ at the side of the pool which we used one night, nice change to restaurant meals. If in the area again we would definately staff here - good value for money.

Despite Americans Best has not ever been good for me. This time I am very satisfied. Helpful staff who suggested us a great place to eat, good breakfast and very very handy. It is just outside the motorway and the exit after Mt Rushmore. Rapid City is a nice place for an evening walk.
