Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: Aircraft that have been flown throughout the eras are on display at South Dakota's premiere free aviation museum! The museum has two major static display venues: First, a outdoor air park filled with WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Cold War, and present day aircraft lets you get close to & touch history. This includes the currently flown B-1B Lancer. Secondly, four historical hangars showcase military history & technology, space tech & EROS, SD aviation, and EAFB local military history in a fresh and immersive walk-through. Mid-May through Mid-September bus tours of nearby Ellsworth AFB and the Minuteman II missile training silo are offered at a nominal fee. You will be able to go inside the silo and on base for a 50 minute guided tour of the only MMII silo open to the public. Make sure you bring your ID or Passport (Non-US) to enjoy the tour!
Useful Information: Bathroom facilities, Wheelchair access

We have visited this museum almost every other times to the Rapid City area, and it is always a treat. The museum is free (while some tours require payment), and there is enough to keep little ones, teens, and adults entertained for several hours. It is a good place to go any time of the year, and has interesting history for all to enjoy. Allow at least an hour for inside and outside exhibits.

Check out all the military planes on display, then head into the small museum and look at the displays. During the summer, you can take a bus tour of the base for a small fee.

We arrived on what must have been the windiest day ever! It was so cold and blustery. After freezing ourselves silly we wandered over to the door and surprise... it's a whole other museum and gift shop inside. Great exhibits.

The aircraft on display as well as the indoor museum are very interesting and our 9 year old grandson was not bored at this facility. However, the highlight of our time here was the bus tour which, for a small fee, takes you to a Minuteman II Missile Silo where you are able to actually enter the silo containing the missile. An awe-inspiring experience!
