If you want to know everything about rocks and fossils, this is the place, they have an area for kids and a gift shop. There are probably more rocks there than people in Rapid City. It was a little confusing to know where to park though, it said permit only, but we saw all kinds of cars parked there, so maybe it was ok with tourists?

“Nice small museum”
Reviewed August 29, 2013

Surprisingly complete. Dino skeletons and lots of rocks and minerals. I was expecting a room in the geology department.

“Great collection of fossils!”
Reviewed August 19, 2013

This is a free museum! It's small, but they have a lot of fascinating fossils and minerals! If your kid likes dinosaurs, go here! They have a triceratops skull found in South Dakota! They pack a lot of specimens in one floor. Good for the whole family. It's on the SDSMT campus, but easy to find. We definitely recommend it!

“Nice collection of minerals and fossils”
Reviewed July 30, 2013

Small museum in the upper floor of O'Hara on the SDSMT campus. Nice collection of local fossils, including some from the Big Pig Dig. The colorful mineral collection is interesting, as are the huge gold nuggets. A small dark room displays a case of fluorescent minerals. The gift shop has "crack your own geodes" for a reasonable price, nephew thought that was cool. Entry to the museum is free or by donation.

Excellent museum for all ages, with very good specimens of geology of the area as well as very good specimens of the dinosaurs found in the area. Great info.
