“Mediocre Hotel Offering Good Rooms But Terrible Service and Extras”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 26, 2013

Although the room was clean, spacious, and well-equipped, the service provided at this Sleep Inn was awful, the fitness center was badly in need of an updating, and the wifi is so slow that it barely works. Overall, this is a sub-par hotel that I would discourage other travelers from staying at. Please read on for more detailed information:

ROOMS: Excellent. The rooms come equipped with mini-fridges that have tiny freezer sections as well, a microwave, a flat panel TV, and the normal assorted other items. Everything was very clean and tidy. The ceilings are extremely high, giving the feeling that the place is quite spacious. One touch I particularly liked was a piece of fudge left in the room with a note from the management expressing its hope that we would enjoy our stay. Unfortunately, this is where the positives of the hotel end.

SERVICE: Awful. We arrived at about 10pm at night and had to wait 15 minutes to check in because the hotel only seemed to have one employee (total) working at that time. (In fairness, a couple of other groups arrived nearly simultaneously.) The real problem was that the hotel uses one of those old credit card imprinting devices and the device broke down with the card of the guest before us stuck in it. After trying to fiddle with it for literally almost 10 min with the rest of us waiting in line, the front desk staffer gave up. Then, he proceeded to fumble our check-in. First, he told us that our reservation had been canceled, but we were certainly not the ones to cancel it! I had even brought the confirmation e-mail with me as proof of reservation. Fortunately, they still had a room available which they told us they would give us for THE SAME rate as the room we booked and that was displayed on my confirmation. The staff member forgot to ask us if we wanted our points credited to Choice Hotels or some other way (such as an airline) and selected the Choice Hotels option for us so when I asked for them to be put on my AAdvantage account (American Airlines), he told us that he had no way of changing it, and I would have to call some sort of corporate number. Finally, to add insult to injury, when I had handed him the hotel confirmation, it was attached to a stack of confirmations that we needed for the rest of our trip. He NEVER GAVE THE STACK BACK TO US and we were so tired from a long day on the road that we didn't realize it at the time.

The problems continued upon check out. First, they tried to charge us the UN-discounted rate for the hotel room, despite their earlier promise. When we told them we needed the discount, it took nearly 10 minutes and multiple employees to figure out how to apply the same discount we had originally booked in the first place! Then, they said they had no clue what had happened to the stack of confirmations. (Eventually, they were able to locate them somewhere in the back office, but if they had moved them at some point to the back office, why would they have not sent such important material that had our names all over it immediately on to our room?) Finally, after iterating all of our general complaints about the hotel, they expressed their apologies but offered nothing more in terms of compensation or future discount or anything of that nature.

SLEEP QUALITY: Poor. We heard trucks going by on the road outside the hotel, and only the fact that we had brought a sound soother saved us from a night of no sleep at all. We were on the first floor so occasionally we also heard people moving around on the floor above us. Finally, the beds were quite hard.

BREAKFAST: Average. Some items were decent (waffles, yogurt, fruit, hard boiled eggs) and others were poor (worst scrambled eggs from powder that I've ever had, stale-tasting muffins and pastries). Coffee is provided as well, which is average in taste.

FITNESS CENTER: Poor. There are three machines in here: a bike, a treadmill, and an elliptical. I tried two of them, and they were both broken in different ways. The treadmill had speed sensors that didn't work (said I was running 14mph--I wish!) and hence screwed up distance, calories, and other measurements and also made a violent amount of noise with all the shaking and rattling going on. The elliptical functioned okay but made a screeching noise as I moved the pedals (clearly needs to be serviced) and the resistance could not be set high enough to get a decent workout. The one nice thing was that there was a TV that one can watch while working out.

POOL: Didn't seem to be any major problems, but the main pool is VERY, VERY small and curved in a strange way so you won't be able to swim laps in here or anything like that if you are anticipating being able to.

All-in-all, any one of the problems we experienced would not be a huge flaw, but taken as a whole, they add up to a real inconvenience--an inconvenience not worth the $100 or more you will likely pay to stay here. Look for better options in Rapid City, as there are MANY hotels in this area.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the top floor and away from the road outside

First and foremost, thank you for being a guest of ours. We appreciate the time you took for your review and complimenting us on our rooms. We have several guests that compliment us on our fudge we supply to our guests during the summer season.
I would like like to apologize for our lack of service that was provided. Thank you for being understanding arriving simultaneously as with other guests. We normally are able to staff two Guest Service Agents, however at around 9pm we do drop down to one. We regret that it took 10 min to check-in and that is also not acceptable to me. I can understand your frustration and will look further into our staffing needs.
Your reservation came to my attention the next morning by on of our Guest Service Agents who mentioned the problem with the booking. Our records sent to us by choice hotels show us that you had two room reservations that were canceled by our central reservation system. When I accessed your “canceled” reservations I did notice a discounted rate. If you were quoted another rate from choice we would appreciate a chance to match the rate you were quoted. Our records do indicate that you were given a further discount at check-out.
Again, we appreciate your business and loyalty to choice hotels. I will cover the items mentioned in your review with our team and will address them accordingly. We hope you will consider us again when coming through Rapid City.

With Hospitality,
Charles Christie

We stayed at this hotel two nigths mid-August and we were very satisfied about the room, the breakfast and, most of all, of the reception staff that was able to accomodate all our requests.
We enjoyed so much our stay that, on our way back, we spent one more night there.

Room Tip: Higher floors are quieter

We hadn't planned on staying at this hotel, or in Rapid City for that matter, but our transmission breaking down meant we selected this hotel as a last resort (it was a busy weekend, few rooms were available). We ended up staying at the Sleep Inn & Suites for four nights until our car was repaired. The staff was very kind and accommodating. They were very considerate, considering our near stranded situation, and allowed us to have extra people and a roll away.
The room was very nice, clean, and smelled good. The beds were comfortable. The breakfast was wonderful, with hot food items including eggs, bacon, and sausage... YUM! However, after four days it varied very little so we did grow wary of the same items. The location was great. It was centrally located in the Black Hills, if your looking for Black Hills attractions.
The pool and hot tub were nice but a bit small. There was an exercise room, however the channel section within it was sorely lacking compared to the rest of the rooms (Channels like Travel, TLC, Discovery...ect that were available in the room were not accessible in the exercise room making the selection poor). The wifi was good with a strong, consistent connection.

While touring National & State Parks in southeast South Dakota, my wife and I chose the Sleep Inn in Rapid City. We found it very clean, spacious and well appointed. I believe it was fairly new. The front desk & breakfast staff was very friendly and helpful. The complimentary breakfast was more than adequate and fairly tasty. They also had complimentary USA Today newspapers in the lobby. Our room, on the top floor, was very quiet with no road noise. It contained a microwave and small refrigerator / freezer. It’s location provided easy access to Elk Valley Road (bypass around Rapid City for quicker access to Mt. Rushmore & Custer S.P.) and I-90 (of leaving toward Wyoming and Yellowstone NP). Gas stations and a few restaurants were nearby. Overall it was a very pleasant stay.

Room Tip: Top floor was very quiet.

Good stop over hotel for a night. Front desk is effective and courteous. Rooms are clean and well kept. Beds and bedding are comfortable.

Morning breakfast is adequate and complimentary. Nothing particularly noteworthy on the positive or negative side for the hotel generally. There is a McDonald's next door for those that like McDonald's, not us.

One cautionary note for the summer vacation traveler. Before you decide to travel and set an itinerary; check the dates of the Sturgis Motorcycle rally. That week all the hotel rates in Rapid City close to double. You can save a lot of money traveling the week before or after.

We did not and we paid the price.

Stayed here in April of 2013.
Here is my review: The headboards were disgusting, fingerprints and who know's what else.
I went a got cleaning supplies to clean because I could not sleep with that mess on the headboards. Also I have never seen so many hairs on the blanket above the sheet, I don't know if a dog rolled around in it or what. I'm very picky so this was unexceptable to me. When you first walk in the room seems fine till you get to looking around. I have worked at motels and have been a cleaning maid for motels, and this would have never gone over..

There are people who just don't care about how clean the room is, there house is probably that way too, so I now take all good reviews to motels etc. with a grain of salt...
