Although the room was clean, spacious, and well-equipped, the service provided at this Sleep Inn was awful, the fitness center was badly in need of an updating, and the wifi is so slow that it barely works. Overall, this is a sub-par hotel that I would discourage other travelers from staying at. Please read on for more detailed information:
ROOMS: Excellent. The rooms come equipped with mini-fridges that have tiny freezer sections as well, a microwave, a flat panel TV, and the normal assorted other items. Everything was very clean and tidy. The ceilings are extremely high, giving the feeling that the place is quite spacious. One touch I particularly liked was a piece of fudge left in the room with a note from the management expressing its hope that we would enjoy our stay. Unfortunately, this is where the positives of the hotel end.
SERVICE: Awful. We arrived at about 10pm at night and had to wait 15 minutes to check in because the hotel only seemed to have one employee (total) working at that time. (In fairness, a couple of other groups arrived nearly simultaneously.) The real problem was that the hotel uses one of those old credit card imprinting devices and the device broke down with the card of the guest before us stuck in it. After trying to fiddle with it for literally almost 10 min with the rest of us waiting in line, the front desk staffer gave up. Then, he proceeded to fumble our check-in. First, he told us that our reservation had been canceled, but we were certainly not the ones to cancel it! I had even brought the confirmation e-mail with me as proof of reservation. Fortunately, they still had a room available which they told us they would give us for THE SAME rate as the room we booked and that was displayed on my confirmation. The staff member forgot to ask us if we wanted our points credited to Choice Hotels or some other way (such as an airline) and selected the Choice Hotels option for us so when I asked for them to be put on my AAdvantage account (American Airlines), he told us that he had no way of changing it, and I would have to call some sort of corporate number. Finally, to add insult to injury, when I had handed him the hotel confirmation, it was attached to a stack of confirmations that we needed for the rest of our trip. He NEVER GAVE THE STACK BACK TO US and we were so tired from a long day on the road that we didn't realize it at the time.
The problems continued upon check out. First, they tried to charge us the UN-discounted rate for the hotel room, despite their earlier promise. When we told them we needed the discount, it took nearly 10 minutes and multiple employees to figure out how to apply the same discount we had originally booked in the first place! Then, they said they had no clue what had happened to the stack of confirmations. (Eventually, they were able to locate them somewhere in the back office, but if they had moved them at some point to the back office, why would they have not sent such important material that had our names all over it immediately on to our room?) Finally, after iterating all of our general complaints about the hotel, they expressed their apologies but offered nothing more in terms of compensation or future discount or anything of that nature.
SLEEP QUALITY: Poor. We heard trucks going by on the road outside the hotel, and only the fact that we had brought a sound soother saved us from a night of no sleep at all. We were on the first floor so occasionally we also heard people moving around on the floor above us. Finally, the beds were quite hard.
BREAKFAST: Average. Some items were decent (waffles, yogurt, fruit, hard boiled eggs) and others were poor (worst scrambled eggs from powder that I've ever had, stale-tasting muffins and pastries). Coffee is provided as well, which is average in taste.
FITNESS CENTER: Poor. There are three machines in here: a bike, a treadmill, and an elliptical. I tried two of them, and they were both broken in different ways. The treadmill had speed sensors that didn't work (said I was running 14mph--I wish!) and hence screwed up distance, calories, and other measurements and also made a violent amount of noise with all the shaking and rattling going on. The elliptical functioned okay but made a screeching noise as I moved the pedals (clearly needs to be serviced) and the resistance could not be set high enough to get a decent workout. The one nice thing was that there was a TV that one can watch while working out.
POOL: Didn't seem to be any major problems, but the main pool is VERY, VERY small and curved in a strange way so you won't be able to swim laps in here or anything like that if you are anticipating being able to.
All-in-all, any one of the problems we experienced would not be a huge flaw, but taken as a whole, they add up to a real inconvenience--an inconvenience not worth the $100 or more you will likely pay to stay here. Look for better options in Rapid City, as there are MANY hotels in this area.
