While on a recent vacation to South Dakota we thought it would be fun to experience a Chuckwagon Supper with our kids. After a day of driving around the Black Hills we pulled into Ft. Hay around 5:30PM. There are some interesting artisans on the grounds as well as the set from "Dancing with Wolves" which apparently was moved there a few years ago.

For dinner, everyone sits along assigned very long picnic tables and the food is served in a buffet line. The food, served on tin plates, was was simple and tasty but the highlight of the evening was the Cowboy Show. It was a variety show with short skits, singing and such and was quite entertaining.

We saw while we were there for the evening show that they also served 99 cents All-You-Can-Eat Pancakes so the next morning we went back for breakfast. The pancakes were great and could be accompanied by sausage for a small up-charge.

This is a part of Americana that is definitely worth the visit.

We do this reunion every year and this is the best tour we have ever taken. The staff and drivers made this trip really something.

Spent the day in the Black Hills. Chose Ft. Hays because we could do it all in one day. Started with a great breakfast, pancakes and sausage were yummy. Our tour was fun and exciting, our driver, Dan,was great. We spent time in the shops and even made a tin plate with Earl, the Tin Man. What fun! Supper was a great experience. The Wranglers, (the performers) filled our plates. Everything was very clean and well organized. The food was top quality. The cowboy show followed. It was very good, talented musicians put on a great show. It would have been better if it wasn't so loud. The jokes were funny, my favorite was a homemade "comodephone", a toilet seat made into a guitar. A great value, all for about $75.00. Amazing!

I agree with the other reviewer about the set-up. We got assigned to the side of the picnic table not facing the stage so it was uncomfortable to swing around in our seats to watch the show. I thought the food was very good, but wished they had served it to us rather than having to get up to get served and then get up to take back the dishes. They should study the Hoop Da Do Review at Disney World on how to make it better.

I thought the local musicians played very well, especially the fiddle player, but the act looks tired and in need of revamping. As to Fort Hays, I was a little disappointed it was not on the actual Dances With Wolves Movie Site, but the buildings had been moved 16 miles to where it is now.
