Stayed here passing through Rapid City. This is obviously an historic hotel that has been well maintained. The rooms weren't spectacular but they were very nice. There is a coffee shop attached as well as a pub. It is located in close proximity to Firehouse Brewery, Wobbly Bobby Irish Pub and a wonderful restaurant, Tally's Silver Spoon.

The hotel staff were very nice and accommodating with one minor exception, a bartender in the pub who seemed to have a chip on her shoulder. She wasn't rude but she didn't seem happy at all.

The room rate was $39.00! This must be the "off" season for this area because a rate this low did not coincide with the quality of the hotel. Would not hesitate to stay here again.

When driving through the states we always take advantage of the hotel coupons found at info centres. The Alex Johnson was one of these and we had no expectations at all - what a pleasant surprise it was. This is a heritage hotel which has recently been renovated. (You may be charged a $6 heritage fee which we though very reasonable given the low rate we paid). The lobby is large and welcoming with a fireplace, piano and armchairs, a Seattle's Best cafe attached. Check in staff were terrific and very helpful about what to see and do in the neighbourhood. We were in our room in no time. The king size bed was an extremely comfortable pillow top - best sleep we have had in ages. The shower was great, the room was not large but it is comfortable, clean, everything worked, and they provide plush robes and good quality towels. We used the gym which again is small but well equipped with treadmill and bikes, and tv! Definitely one of our favourite hotels. If you like older, character hotels you'll enjoy this one. Location is in the middle of town in a funky neighbourhood with lots of independent shops, wine bars, restaurants etc. Be sure to check out the back lanes - they have allowed the graffiti artists a free hand and the results are wonderful.

We stayed 2 nights of a family vacation. My only complaint is that the TV was in an old-style entertainment center which was set at a 45-degree angle in the corner. Those old entertainment centers from the pre-flat-panel-TV era take up so much room that one door of the entertainment center couldn't close - it would hit the bed. The Hotel should bite the bullet and buy new dressers a flat-panel-TV can sit atop.
Small complaint - otherwise good stay, cool property, close to everythng downtwon yet very easy in/out to Rushmore and the Black Hills. The new vertex rooftop lounge was delicious and more than you might expect in Rapid City. Paddy O'Neil's served maybe the best burger I have had - super-thick juicy tomato and onion, perfectly done on a square patty. I suppose a great burger is to be expected in Rapid City ranch country. We had a mini-suite which included a fridge and a microwave, which was great. Furniture is a little tired but bathroom was sparkling.
We enjoyed it, we'll watch "North by Northwest" and hope to be back next year.

We stayed at the Hotel over St. Patricks Day Weekend and had a great time. The Hotel was very clean and well kept. The food in both Patty O'Niells and Vertex was great. The Staff was working their butts off in Paddy's but still managed a smile and good service. And as I am older than I want to admit, Going up to Vertex gave me a break from the Mayhem of the crowds of the pub. I would and do recommend the Alex to anyone I meet.

I love historic hotels and the Alex Johnson is that. The room was nicely furnished though small, which is typical of hotels built in the early 1900's. The bed was very comfortable the pillows not too soft or firm. The only problem we experienced during our stay was with the movie system. The movie my son wanted to watch wasn't coming on and the front desk supervisor said she didn't know why and couldn't fix. The British chap that was tending bar in the lounge on the room top was great. Very knowledgeable about the Black Hills and Rapid City and provided great service. The Seattle Best Coffee Shop attached was very comfortable and convenient. Overall, the hotel provided a great stay and the service was good. Highly recommend staying at The Hotel Alex Johnson.
