Owner description: Not your typical museum structure, this one is built into the side of hill, and much of it is underground. A contemporary version of a traditional Native American dwelling, this beautiful building features Native American (mostly the Sioux tribes) and pioneer exhibits, with many rare artifacts tracing the history of South Dakota.

“Good Place to Visit While in Pierre”
Reviewed October 18, 2012

The Cultural Heritage Center is worth visiting just to look at how the building has been made a part of the hillside and the landscaping has utililzed native plants. Within the Museum is "done well" and the exhibits reflect much of South Dakota's rural and prairie heritage. The State Archives is staffed by very helpful and friendly people who are pleased to help you with your research and they have a good collection of materials.

“Great Museum”
Reviewed October 7, 2012

This is an extremely well organized museum/cultural center that gives a real insight, understanding of the people, history and culture of the South Dakota of the past and today. The staff is well prepared and they loan you your personal loose leaf notebook for the tour so you can expand on the signage of specific exhibits. I spent more than three hours enjoying the excellent displays.

Very well done museum. Notable are the sod house, stage coach, and train car. Wonderful display of Native American (Sioux) clothing and artifacts. Traces the heritage of South Dakota up to present time.

“Definitive South Dakota history”
Reviewed July 14, 2012 via mobile

This museum gives a fabulous overview of South Dakota history without being overwhelming....nicely displayed & a very balanced depiction of historical events. We especially enjoyed the military displays & the written histories they ask each visitor to submit about events such as the Depression, living in South Dakota it what it was like during times of war...well worth a visit!

“By far the best way to learn about the history of the west”
Reviewed June 17, 2012

I have been coming to South Dakota since I was a kid and have visited all of the tourist sites in Mitchell, Wall, and the Black Hills. This weekend, I finally took the time to visit the Cultural Heritage Center in Pierre. Wow! This place was informative and fun. Pierre is not right on the interstate but if you have the time, this museum is worth a visit.
