Owner description: The Mitchell Prehistoric Indian Village is the only archaeological site in South Dakota open to the public. It is a 1,000 year-old village located on the shores of lovely Lake Mitchell. Each summer students from the University of Exeter, England and Augustana University, Sioux Falls continue the excavation of the site. Tours are given every day during the summer months by knowledgeable guides. Plenty of activities for all ages. Visit the museum, the dig site (located in the Archeodome) and Shoppe Antiquary (a gift shop featuring Native American jewelry, pottery, art and more). Our biggest event of the year is Archeology Awareness Days, held on July 2nd and 3rd, 2016. Open Monday thru Saturday 8:00am - 7:00 pm beginning Memorial Day weekend; open Sundays 10:00am to 6:00pm. Open the rest of the year 9:00am - 6:00pm.

Very educational for all ages ... great destination for school field trips, too. I've taken several classes there.

Fascinating tour over the archiogical (sp?) digs. The re-creation of the huts in the main lobby was very interesting also. We by-passed the Corn Palace on this trip to catch the Prehistoric Indian Village.

First impression was to turn around and leave when we crossed a small waterway to get to the museum. The stench from the water ( I think it was the water) was horrible. But once we were past that,we were greeted and offered a video viewing about the place. We about an hour looking at exhibits . I saw things Ive never seen before. We took a nice stroll across a great lawn to another building housing an actual dig site where relics and such have been and still are found. There are many samples of relics and other things. After about another hour, we returned to the first building and shopped in the gift store for souvenirs to take home to our grandchildren.
