Owner description: The Mitchell Prehistoric Indian Village is the only archaeological site in South Dakota open to the public. It is a 1,000 year-old village located on the shores of lovely Lake Mitchell. Each summer students from the University of Exeter, England and Augustana University, Sioux Falls continue the excavation of the site. Tours are given every day during the summer months by knowledgeable guides. Plenty of activities for all ages. Visit the museum, the dig site (located in the Archeodome) and Shoppe Antiquary (a gift shop featuring Native American jewelry, pottery, art and more). Our biggest event of the year is Archeology Awareness Days, held on July 2nd and 3rd, 2016. Open Monday thru Saturday 8:00am - 7:00 pm beginning Memorial Day weekend; open Sundays 10:00am to 6:00pm. Open the rest of the year 9:00am - 6:00pm.
Useful Information: Bathroom facilities, Activities for young children, Activities for older children, Wheelchair access

This was an interesting, laid back but very informative tour of an active excavation on the site of an ancient Indian village. Nothing earth shattering or anything, but we all had a pleasant and interesting time. More for the grown ups probably, but not bad for the kids either with a couple of fun activities thrown in. And beats the corn palace all to heck.

Seeing a real archeological site was extremely interesting. Good museum, especially given that this is based on one site.

For us, the most fun was trying our skills with a spear and atlatl.

While passing through Mitchell we decided to stop in and see the Indian Village. The staff was very polite and even let the kids (ages 10 and 11) place a pin on a giant map to show where we were visiting from.

Other activities the boys enjoyed were spear throwing and the arrowhead dig.

Overall this visit was very informative, interesting and great for a family on a tight traveling budget.

This place surprised me as there was absolutely NO boredom (like there usually is on anything educational) all 3 of us absolutely enjoyed it here. There was a lot of hands on and interesting things here- our favorite was the archeodome. Inside there was an active dig which was interesting to look at. There was a sorting station to sort bones from pottery, a cleaning station for kids, questions that you have to try to answer by looking at bones (yes they're real), and more of such. There was a dig area where daughter had to find plastic arrow to exchange for a real arrow and a spear throwing station to throw spears- she loved that!

My kids, 6 and 8 really enjoyed the museaum but especially the outdoor activities. They learned about prehistoric indian life and found arrowheads in a pretend dig. The hole family enjoyed it. They are located right on lake mitchell which is beautiful and they have a nice picnic area too.
