My wife and I visited this place. Fact: This is a multipurpose place where they have high school graduation, hip hop rap rock country concerts and many other things. There is a lot of history and photo ops here but also there is a lot of stuff for sale...i.e. tourist trap warning. If you like to read up on history you will enjoy this place but I think kids will not care about this. Overall would say 3.5 stars out of 5 stars. If you pass by the area, you should at least take a picture of the outside.

there are not to many place to see in a large state like SD so this was a welcome surprise for us. not far from the state road so we did not have to make a huge detoured on our way to rapid city. the town is very pretty and clean. the corn palace in side and out is spectacular. a must see.

The scenes on front of palace were in the process of being changed. We really liked the scenes on sides of building. Very nice and interesting attraction.

Another pure slice of americana. The thing about the corn palace is, it isn’t a tourist trap. The locals actually use it for everything you’d typically stage in the local civic center. They were holding a youth pedal tractor pull the day we stopped by….I guarantee you don’t see that everyday. There is no admission fee if you’re just going to wander around the inside and there will be some lovely older ladies avaiable to greet you and give you a little info about the palace. It was originally made of mostly corn (and wood) but, surprisingly, that burnt down a long time ago. The current version is a more sturdy (and relatively fire-resistant) brick and cement. The palace is adorned with a new design every year and that design is spelled out with corn and cornstalks, etc. There is a small gift shop in the palace for the ubiquitous fridge magnets. You can even get an “ear” of popped corn at the concession stand. If you’re driving east or west through South Dakota, take a little detour and stop by the Corn Palace. You’ll be the only one in your neighborhood who’s been there.

Mitchell’s Corn Palace is a very interesting multi-purpose building that both provides a venue for basketball games and shows, and also highlights the importance of farming (corn in particular) to the local and national economy. The exterior of the Palace, decorated with murals made out of multi-coloured corn-cobs and straw, is unlike anything you’ll have seen before and is well worth the visit on its own. But go inside and the farming exhibits, including audio-visual shows, vintage tractors and corn shucking machines, really let you understand the place farming has in America’s Mid-West.

Go visit it next time you’re travelling the I-90 – it’s just a couple of minutes off the freeway and the rest of Mitchell is also very pretty and will serve you up with a nice coffee or lunch too.
