“A diamond amidst a gold mine!”
Reviewed October 7, 2012

This hotel was GREAT! I'd read all the other reviews before booking and they were spot on! Incredibly comfortable beds, very generously sized rooms, all the amenities that you hope for in a hotel, but with an historic flair. Kelly, the general manager, was an invaluable resource. He gave us great recommendations on how to maximize our time in the hills and got us anything we asked for before we could even finish asking for it. I would recommend the month of September for visiting the area to anyone with some flexibility. The Black Hills were beautiful and the leaves were just starting to change color, the weather was perfect, and it wasn't as busy as when we'd visited on a previous trip in July. The Inn also has a guest book in the lobby and there are even more kind words written there than online. A previous guest wrote that The Historic Town Hall Inn was, "a diamond in the middle of a gold mine" and I couldn't agree more.

I can echo all the great comments about the Town Hall Inn in Lead SD. The room was great and yes one of the most comfortable beds I have ever used at a hotel or B&B. The clerk was the son of the owners and was friendly and helpful for great tips to eat and visit. We were in the Auditors Room also and it was great with one exception. As you are on the ground floor, the outdoor noise will echo thru the room. Case in point, one morning about 2AM, some idiot decided to crank his motorcycle full throttle near the inn causing us to jump up from a dead sleep. I agree with the comments about breakfast for Spankies but lunch was disappointing for us. Also, if you like/have to get started early, breakfast at Spankies can be problematic as they don't open until 8AM some days and 9AM on others. The Inn has an agreement with another local bakery that serves breakfast but their food was very disappointing - would not recommend visiting their establishment. Shuttle service is not available as the vehicle used for that purpose is now being utilized by one of the family members at college. The town is very unique and Deadwood is just down the road. If you want fast food restaurants and chain stores, you will have to drive a ways to Spearfish as the closest Walmart/Kmart and fast food joints are there. The family goes out of their way to make your visit an enjoyable one!

I can't say enough about our stay at Historic Town Hall Inn. Kelly and his Dad were terrific HOST!!! We stayed in the Library (rm. 203), and it was spotless. If we needed anything ... a ride, had any questions or wanted somewhere good to eat at...they were very helpful. The next time we go to South Dakota...we will certainly stay at HistoricTown Hall Inn again.

Writing this review from the most comfortable hotel bed ever (even better than the ritz and the four seasons). Lovely room, very clean and comfortable with lots of charm. Kelly is the owner, housekeeper, bellman and concierge. Also, about the cutest and nicest host ever. Lead is a nice change of pace, yet just down the road from the action in Deadwood. We will definitely be back!

Refurbished town hall in Lead, SD (pron. "Leed"). As an example, our room had been the Auditor's Office, and had 18' ceilings and a vault (sorry, it won't open). The room had been well-appointed with private bath, full kitchen, supersoft king bed and a table with two chairs. The AC was a window unit, but served well this hot June afternoon/evening. The construction of the building led to two interesting things: (1) Despite the room being off the entry and front desk, and having late arrivals plus late revelers returning from Deadwood, we heard NOTHING. (2) The windows were LARGE and there were half-moon windows above them and the door. Consequently, the room was fairly well lighted during the night. Oh, yes! It doesn't have an elevator

The total cost for the room was $87.87 for the night. The clerk was the son of the owners and was friendly and helpful throughout. Note that, if you need ice, he'll have to get it for you - they loaned their icemaker to Spankie's Cafe - but this is quick and not a problem.

And speaking of Spankie's -- the little restaurant across the street from the hotel is a gem. The place is owned by a couple of ladies from Texas, I believe, and it's a small, good-food place to get a tasty breakfast. The Homestake Mine, once one of the largest gold mines in the U.S., is also in Lead, and they have tours if you're interested.

Note that Lead is right next door to Deadwood and it's fun stuff. The clerk can help get you there and back again (note the late revelers, above). In addition, Deadwood has Mt. Moriah Cemetery, where Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane are buried. There is a fee, and you can take a tour or walk it (the Hickok and Jane graves are within walking distance).

A couple of final notes about the hotel. The parking can be problematic, as there are only a few spots on the street by the hotel. When you make a reservation, call the hotel to get the details. Also be wary of the street to the side of the hotel - if you're not in a Jeep or SUV, try to avoid turning onto it, because a regular car will bottom out.

I highly recommend staying at the Historic Town Hall Inn. From the moment we entered the place we were awed by the hospitality of the staff and the character in this fully restored building. Each room was well decorated and the cleanest of any place we ever stayed. Each room is named for it's former purpose and is displayed above the door. The rooms are extra large and filled with antiques representing the decor of the early days of prosperity in the Black Hills. The building is fully modernized with good electrical, showers, and air conditioning (which was important as it was 102 degrees outside). Be prepared for historic. There are not elevators but do take a few minutes for a photo op on the grand staircase. This has become our place to stay in the Black Hills.

What an awesome value. You will not find better service anywhere in the Blackhills no matter what you pay. Kelly, the owner, goes out of his way to make you feel welcome. He helps you plan your vacation and answers all your questions.
The rooms are all large and comfortable. We staid with 4 teenagers and they loved their room. There's no pool or elevator but you won't miss either. Give this gem a try.
