Historic Homestake Opera House

Attraction details
Recommended length of visit: <1 hour
Owner description: Built in 1914 by the Homestake Gold Mine the building boasted a billiards hall, bowling alley, library, 1,000-seat theater, and a 25-yd. heated indoor swimming pool. The elaborately designed building survived a theater fire in 1984 and sat empty for nearly a dozen years; but now is a nonprofit performing arts venue hosting 50+ events per year in theatre, dance, and concerts, and educational presentations while the first-ever plasterwork within the interior theater begins restoration progress in 2017.

“Interesting old opera house”
Reviewed August 4, 2013

The docent for our visit was also a board member and had lots of information to impart about the origins, fire, and current restoration project. This was a complete recreation center in the big days of the Homestake mine, with bowling lanes below, a library, etc.

They have come a long way in the restoration, which many parts of the building showing their original beauty, but they still have millions of dollars to raise and spend to complete the job. Plays, music, weddings, etc can be held here in the meantime. It is obviously very important to the residents of Lead as well as its historic importance.

“Grand old opera house”
Reviewed July 16, 2013

Still a work in progress to restore following a devastating fire in the 1980s. However, much of the original architecture can been seen, and the exterior structure remains largely intact. A beautiful old building.

“Lawrence Welk Show!”
Reviewed November 19, 2012

First time here for the Lawrence Welk parody show. This place is full of history, currently under restoration, you can still see the black residue from the fire thru out the stage and ceiling.

We're very glad you were able to attend the Champagne Variety Show, as it's one of our annual fundraisers we get to feature on the stage. The performers have a great time with it - especiall 'Lorrence Velk.' Thank you for the review. See you again soon.

“Being Restored”
Reviewed October 31, 2012

When we visited here to see a play, the theatre was still being restored after a very bad fire, but you could see how great this place was, and hopefully will be again. Very cool venue.

“Historic Place with lots of charm”
Reviewed September 9, 2012

This is an historic place that was built to give the Miner's in Lead a place to go and do things. It was first used as a recreation center for the miners. They have local musicals/plays performed there. On the tour, you will hear about the tragic fire in 1984 and see how they are refurbishing the building to make it the jewel of the Black Hills once again!
